It didn’t take long for a new psychological thriller starring Doctor Who and The Walking Dead alums Alan Cumming and David Morrissey to rise in the ranks on streaming, as after just a few short days, it’s already one of the biggest hits in the world. Cumming starred in Doctor Who a couple of times as both King James I and the voice of Lux Imperator (a.k.a. Mr. Ring-A-Ding). Morrissey is best known for his time as The Governor on The Walking Dead, though he also appeared in the 2008 Doctor Who Christmas Special as a one-off companion to David Tennant’s Tenth Doctor.
A Feud Between Neighbors Makes for a Timely Psychological Thriller
Created by Doctor Who icon Russell T Davies, Tip Toe stars Cumming as Leo Struthers, a gay man who runs a bar on Manchester’s Canal Street. Morrissey plays his neighbor, Clive Goss. While the two have been living next to one another for years, they’re not exactly best buds, but they do manage to co-exist.
That being said, things take a turn for the worse when Leo gives Clive the spare key to his apartment and a seemingly harmless incident turns into a full-blown feud between the two. Making matters worse is the fact that Clive becomes influenced by all the hateful anti-LGBTQ+ prejudice he sees on social media, turning Tip Toe into a tense psychological thriller that’s as much about warring neighbors as it is a commentary on social injustices.
Premiering in the U.K. on Channel 4 earlier this year, Tip Toe recently began streaming on Starz in the United States. It’s already proven to be a massive hit thus far, as, after just one episode, it became the most popular show on the platform. With two now streaming and three more to go every Friday, expect Tip Toe to remain near the top of the charts for its entire run until the last one becomes available on Oct. 30.
‘Tip Toe’ Is a Near-Perfect Thriller
Certified Fresh on Rotten Tomatoes with a score of 96% from critics, it’s clear that Tip Toe is one of those shows that’s resonated with a lot of people. “The series speaks its bitter truth with its whole chest, and makes that its own cathartic kind of power,” writes Angie Han of The Hollywood Reporter. Elsewhere, Joey Moser of The Contending says it “might be one of the most immediate, urgent, and pressing dramas of Davies’ career,” while Lacy Baugher of Collider adds:
“Tip Toe dares you to look away from what the ugliest and most radicalized elements of our society are doing to the least among us and pretend we don’t know where attitudes like these ultimately lead.”
Most viewers are in full agreement, as Tip Toe holds a solid audience rating of 82%. Though there are some who have called it “preposterous,” the consensus seems to be that it’s a timely thriller that ranges from “hilarious to bitterly bleak.” Both Cumming and Morrissey have earned high praise for their work, with many also commenting that the acting is “fantastic.”
