The UK market town that’s been named Britain’s most underrated | Travel News | Travel

A market town in Norfolk has been named the UK’s most underrated. In its judgement, travel publication Love Exploring said that while the county has “no shortage” of beautiful towns and villages, its pick is the “lovely” settlement – Holt. The town, which is about 23 miles north of Norwich, is hailed for its antique stores, bookshops, galleries and eateries. Holt also boasts “a maze of courtyards and alleyways waiting to be explored”, according to Love Exploring. There are also various attractions nearby, including heritage Holt Railway Station where visitors can catch a stream train to the coast.

Visit North Norfolk describes Holt as a charming Georgian town surrounded by parks and close to the coast, making it an “ideal” place for holidays.

The town’s landmarks can be traced along an Owl Trail, which is signposted by plaques of the bird of prey set into the pavement.

Holt is also noted for its festival, which brings together street performers, dancers, artists, musicians and more.

There is a Sunday market as well as a street market where independent traders offer the “best” in local produce and crafts, according to Visit North Norfolk.

The town also features stone yards where there are shops and tea rooms to explore.

Eateries recommended by OpenTable include The Dun Cow, Byfords, The King’s Head, The Owl Tearooms and Michael’s Bistro.

Nearby attractions recommended by the same publication include 100-acre woodland, Holt Country Park, the ruins of Baconsthorpe Castle and Letheringsett Watermill.

There are various places to stay in Holt, including The Maltings, Byfords and The Feathers. Holiday cottages are also available through companies such as Norfolk Cottages.

Kelling Heath Woodland Lodges is also near the town as is The Pheasant Country Hotel and Inn. Some of its rooms are dog-friendly too.

Other than its heritage station, Holt does not have a running train station. To get there by train, you can travel to nearby Sheringham and catch a bus from there. By car, the town is on the A148 about 34 miles east of King’s Lynn.
