SAS Offers Status Match to SkyTeam Elite Plus

SAS EuroBonus is offering a paid status match through StatusMatch.com, giving elite members of more than 80 airline programs a shortcut to SkyTeam Elite or SkyTeam Elite Plus benefits, with no flight challenge required.

If you hold status with Aeroplan, WestJet Rewards, or most other major airline programs, you could match into EuroBonus Silver, Gold, or Diamond and pick up perks like lounge access, SkyPriority, and extra baggage on SkyTeam flights around the world.

Once approved, your new tier is valid for the rest of your current EuroBonus membership year, plus another 12 months.

Matching Status with SAS EuroBonus

The match is processed entirely online, and the fee depends on the EuroBonus tier you’re matching into. For residents of Canada and most other countries, it’s €89 for Silver (about $142 CAD), €199 for Gold (about $317 CAD), and €349 for Diamond (about $555 CAD).

Residents of Poland and India get lower promotional fees of €39, €79, and €159, respectively. Fees include taxes. Residents of China, Brazil, Argentina, Hong Kong, and Taiwan aren’t eligible to apply.

StatusMatch.com places a hold on your payment when you apply and only processes it once you’re approved. Since the charge is in euros, it’s worth paying with a card that doesn’t charge foreign transaction fees.

Which Programs Can You Match From?

Unlike some other status matches, SAS only accepts airline status, so hotel and credit card elites can’t apply. Elites from SkyTeam airlines, Singapore Airlines, TAP Air Portugal, and Etihad aren’t eligible either.

Your EuroBonus tier depends on the status you hold today. Aeroplan 25K and 35K members match to Silver, 50K members match to Gold, and 75K and Super Elite members match to Diamond. WestJet Rewards Silver and Gold members match to the same EuroBonus tiers, while Platinum members match to Diamond.

If you qualify for Diamond, you can choose Gold instead and pay the lower fee. Both tiers come with SkyTeam Elite Plus, so that’s worth considering if the alliance benefits are what you’re after.

SAS EuroBonus & SkyTeam Benefits

SAS EuroBonus has three elite tiers available through the status match. Each one comes with its own benefits on SAS, plus the corresponding SkyTeam Elite or SkyTeam Elite Plus perks across the alliance.

The SAS status match page lists the benefits of each EuroBonus tier.

EuroBonus Silver → SkyTeam Elite

On SAS, Silver gets you 25% more EuroBonus points when you fly, one extra checked bag, free seat selection, and priority check-in. You’ll also get priority customer service and 5% off regular award trips booked with points.

Across the alliance, Silver maps to SkyTeam Elite. That covers priority check-in and boarding, preferred seating where available, and an extra baggage allowance. There’s no lounge access at this level.

EuroBonus Gold → SkyTeam Elite Plus

Gold adds free lounge access on SAS, two extra checked bags, a guaranteed seat, and free onboard Wi-Fi. You’ll also earn 50% more EuroBonus points when you fly and get 10% off regular award trips booked with points.

More importantly, Gold maps to SkyTeam Elite Plus. That gets you and one guest into lounges when you fly internationally on any SkyTeam airline, even in economy, along with priority baggage handling and SkyPriority lanes at security and immigration where available.

Elite Plus also guarantees you a full-fare economy seat on sold-out long-haul flights of six hours or more, as long as you book at least 24 hours ahead.

EuroBonus Diamond → SkyTeam Elite Plus

Diamond adds 75% more EuroBonus points when you fly, no points expiry, free rebooking on the day of departure, and no booking fees on SAS award trips. You’ll also get free drinks in economy and 30% off regular award trips booked with points.

On the alliance side, Diamond comes with the same SkyTeam Elite Plus perks as Gold. Matched members get every benefit of their new tier except Diamond’s membership giveaway, and the matched year doesn’t count toward lifetime Gold or Diamond status.

How Do You Apply?

You’ll need a EuroBonus account first, which is free to open. From there, apply on the SAS status match page with your EuroBonus number and your current airline membership number.

You may be asked for proof of status, like a screenshot or a photo of your status card, along with an identity check using your passport or driver’s licence.

SAS says you’ll get a decision within three days, and your new tier can take up to 10 business days to appear in your EuroBonus account. There’s no published end date, but the offer closes once SAS fills its quota of matches.

Should You Consider This Match?

If you’re a regular SAS flyer, the match might make sense on its own. For most Canadians, though, the real value is in SkyTeam Elite Plus, which comes with Gold or Diamond.

From Canada, that covers lounge access and SkyPriority when you fly Air France, KLM, Delta, or Korean Air internationally, even in economy. It also gets you into the SkyTeam Lounge in Vancouver.

SkyTeam Elite Plus opens the door to lounges like the SkyTeam Lounge in Vancouver.

This is also one of the few ways to hold elite status in two alliances at once. An Aeroplan 50K member already has Star Alliance Gold, and €199 would add SkyTeam Elite Plus on top for the rest of this membership year and the next.

Silver is a harder sell. €89 buys priority services and an extra bag, but no lounge access, so it only adds up if you check bags often on SkyTeam flights.

There are a couple of caveats to keep in mind. StatusMatch.com says applications based on temporary status or a status challenge may not be approved, which could affect members who just completed the Aeroplan challenge for World of Hyatt elites.

The match also can’t be used to extend a EuroBonus tier you already hold, whether you earned it by flying or through a previous match.

If you also want oneworld status, our look at the Royal Jordanian status match covers a similar paid route to oneworld Sapphire.

Conclusion

SAS EuroBonus is one of the more generous paid status matches out there, with more than 80 eligible airline programs and SkyTeam Elite Plus available from €199.

If I held Aeroplan 50K or higher and flew Air France, KLM, or Delta a few times a year, I’d take Gold over Diamond and pocket the difference. The lounge access alone can cover the fee after a couple of international trips.

Since the offer closes once the quota fills, I wouldn’t wait too long if it fits your travel plans.
