Walton Goggins’ Villain Revealed in New Set Photos From 80s Action Thriller Remake

Hollywood is officially heading back to the decade of synth-pop and pastel suits, as production kicks into high gear on the ambitious Miami Vice ’85 reboot. Drawing direct inspiration from the iconic ’80s television series created by Anthony Yerkovich, this new project shifts away from the gritty realism of Michael Mann’s 2006 feature film adaptation to embrace the vibrant, stylized aesthetic of the original show. That signature neon energy is already on full display, with the movie’s very first set photos surfacing to offer a fascinating window into the retro era that director Joseph Kosinski and his creative team are meticulously recreating.

Production on Miami Vice ’85 officially kicked off on Oct. 12, 2026, with Universal Pictures releasing a first look at stars Michael B. Jordan and Austin Butler in their respective roles as Ricardo Tubbs and Sonny Crockett to mark the start of principal photography. The promotional images offered a thrilling teaser of what is to come, capturing the high-fashion swagger of the iconic duo. However, these photos only scratched the surface of the film’s powerhouse ensemble – and it hasn’t taken long for the first wave of set photos to leak, exposing a deeper look at the various players populating the criminal underworld.

Chief among those faces is Walton Goggins, whose mysterious villain character has finally been unmasked through these candid snapshots, provided courtesy of Just Jared and subsequently shared across social media. The actor, who is well known for his chameleon-like ability to play captivating antagonists, appears entirely in his element, as he casually walks through the sun-drenched filming spot, wearing tinted sunglasses and an open-collar shirt, paired with pleated pants, a leather belt, and vintage-style loafers.

Additional photos showed lead actor Butler, fully channeling his inner Crockett in a teal-colored shirt and crisp white pants, filming a scene alongside previously announced co-star Danny Ramirez. However, the most shocking revelation from the candid gallery was the surprise presence of The Holdovers breakout star Dominic Sessa. Sessa’s involvement in the high-profile reboot has been kept entirely under wraps by Universal Pictures, with no official trade announcements or casting confirmations preceding his appearance on the set.

The sprawling cast of Miami Vice ’85 also features Alden Ehrenreich, Camila Morrone, John Leguizamo, Andre Holland, Michael Irby, and Whitney Peak. With such an immense lineup of established stars and breakout talent anchoring the production, Universal Pictures is clearly positioning the reboot as a major theatrical event that is designed to dominate the summer box office. Audiences will get to experience Kosinski’s bold new vision in its entirety when the high-octane action thriller opens in theaters on May 19, 2028.
