Anthony Lund is a senior news writer and editor at MovieWeb from a small village in the U.K. with an avid love of all genres of TV and film. A child of the 80s, he is the owner of almost 2000 books, more toys than his children, three Warner Bros. Store Gremlins and a production used Howard The Duck movie script. He has built up a deep knowledge of movie trivia, iconic quotes, and will stand by his belief that Aliens beats The Empire Strikes Back and Terminator 2 as the greatest sequel of all time.
Grey’s Anatomy is shutting its doors today due to the nationwide anti-ICE protests that have been picking up pace following last weekend’s shooting of Alex Pretti in Minneapolis. According to Deadline, production on the long-running ABC medical drama will be halted after it was revealed that crew members would not be showing up for work due to taking part in the protests.
The protests come from a call to action by student groups from the University of Minnesota, which have been answered by many across the country in response to the growing unrest and condemnation of ICE agents actions in the state in the last month. It is possible that the “National Shutdown” will end up impacting other TV and movie filming schedules on Friday, which will monitor and update on.
UMN’s Somali Student Association and Black Student Union are two of the prominent groups behind the protest. The website created by the collective reads, “The people of the Twin Cities have shown the way for the whole country – to stop ICE’s reign of terror, we need to SHUT IT DOWN. On Friday, January 30, join a nationwide day of no school, no work and no shopping. Vote NO to ICE funding.”
Several celebrities, including Pedro Pascal and Ariana Grande, have shared posts linked to the public protest, spurring even more interest in the movement against the kind of incident that has dominated news coverage in this past month. Filming on Grey’s Anatomy, and any other postponed shows and films, is expected to recommence on Saturday.
