Taylor Sheridan is one of the most dominant figures in prestige television, and for good reason. Beginning with the iconic neo-Western Yellowstone in 2018, Sheridan has staged a gradual takeover of R-rated crime, Western, and action thriller television. As of Mary 2026, Sheridan is an acting executive producer on five separate series spanning a variety of genres, and while he doesn’t direct or write for every series, his fingerprints can certainly be found on all of them in subtle ways.
By and large, Sheridan’s TV shows receive solid reviews from critics and excellent streaming numbers, thanks in no small part to the sheer star power that Sheridan weaponizes with each gripping narrative. For nearly a decade, Sheridan has successfully enticed some of the biggest stars in Hollywood to turn to television, including Zoe Saldaña, Jeremy Renner, Sylvester Stallone, Billy Bob Thornton, and Michelle Pfeiffer, among many others. Each Sheridan show has unmatched gravitas when it comes to the main protagonists, but the recent Yellowstone sequel series Dutton Ranch might be the best example yet of one of the most successful trends of the prolific creator’s work.
‘Dutton Ranch’ Has an Exceptional Supporting Cast
Dutton Ranch continues the story of Beth Dutton and her husband, Rip Wheeler, who have started a new life in Texas with their adoptive son Carter. To be clear, Kelly Reilly and Cole Hauser have certainly evolved into major stars in their own right, thanks in large part to their roles in Yellowstone. However, Dutton Ranch also boasts a particularly excellent supporting cast around its pair of heroes, which is a trademark of virtually all Sheridan shows.
Through its first two episodes, the primary villain of Dutton Ranch appears to be Beulah Jackson, a wealthy ranch owner at cross-purposes with Beth and Rip, played by five-time Academy Award nominee Annette Bening. Her reckless, violent youngest son is played with delightful insanity by Jai Courtney (Dangerous Animals, The Suicide Squad). Rounding out the major players in the town of Rio Paloma is four-time Academy Award nominee Ed Harris, who plays the kindly ranch veterinarian and Navy veteran Everett McKinney.
The Veteran Actors Elevate the Quality and Grandeur of ‘Dutton Ranch’
Taking nothing away from Reilly and Hauser, the veteran actors that they get to play off of in Dutton Ranch provide an extra level of quality to the entire show. Harris’ quiet dignity, Bening’s devilish yet polite hostility, and Courtney’s unhinged animosity all take what could come across as an unoriginal neo-Western and transform the narrative into something more engaging. Showrunner Chad Feehan selected the perfect supporting cast to ensure that Dutton Ranch feels like it has real stakes and danger, while not losing the charisma and coolness of a neo-Western. It’s a line that Yellowstone walked for at least its first four seasons, and so far Dutton Ranch has been a worthy replacement in that regard.
