In Apr. 2026, dynamic creative team Phil Lord and Christopher Miller (known more simply as Lord and Miller) came back to theaters as the directors of Project Hail Mary. Led by Barbie star Ryan Gosling, Project Hail Mary became one of the early big hits of the year; it opened with an $80 million domestic box-office haul, which still ranks as the fifth-highest opening weekend of the year. Over two and a half months into its run in theaters, it is approaching a $680 million worldwide haul, which trails only Michael and The Super Mario Galaxy Movie for the year’s highest total.
Lord and Miller already have plenty of new projects lined up for development, including 2027’s Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse, the third and final movie in their hit animated web-slinger trilogy. This comes after the pair’s involvement in the Nicolas Cage-led live-action Spider-Noir series on Prime Video, which brings to life a fan-favorite hero they helped make popular in 2018’s Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse. Now, the duo is set to return to the live-action sci-fi world for a thrilling new theatrical release.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Phil Lord and Christopher Miller have signed with Universal Pictures to produce a new sci-fi project titled I Promise We’re Cool. They are set to work with writer Charlie Hall (known for his work on The Sex Lives of College Girls and Monster: The Ed Gein Story), and Max Tzannes will direct the new project. While specific plot details were not revealed, it is described as a high-concept high school comedy with a sci-fi twist. The story elements are also reportedly right in line with Lord and Miller’s past works, including their 2012 21 Jump Street reboot and the aforementioned Project Hail Mary.
While not much is yet known about I Promise We’re Cool plot-wise, Lord and Miller seem to be the perfect choices to bring this new project to life. Along with the pair’s work on hit sci-fi movies, they also earned praise for their efforts on their The LEGO Movie duology and 2009’s Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs. The two should be able to work seamlessly with Tzannes and Hall (the son of comedians Julia Louis-Dreyfus and Brad Hall) to bring the same level of excellence they are known for across their long careers. Considering the success they have already enjoyed this year with Project Hail Mary, anticipation will be high to see how the pair bridges different genres and delivers another exciting sci-fi adventure when I Promise We’re Cool pushes further into development.
For now, Project Hail Mary is still playing in theaters worldwide.
