The event is part of the 250th anniversary of America’s founding, and is scheduled for the weekend. The primary attraction, seven mixed martial arts matches, will take place on Sunday.
Two Virginia residents have sought to halt the proceedings by filing a federal lawsuit against the National Park Service. The agency filed a rebuttal of the request on Tuesday in court.
Well over $60 million and tens of thousands of hours of labor have been expended,” the court document laid out for the operations of the event read. The document indicated that this fund came from the UFC and groups affiliated with it, but did not specify how much government money has been spent on this.
The eight-sided cage has been constructed on the South Lawn and is expected to hold 4,000 spectators, with another 120,000 visitors, who have won the tickets on an online lottery.
The work for the match began on May 20, 2026. Since then, between 700 and 900 staff have come to work for the massive project.
The planned ceremony will kick off Saturday with a ceremonial weigh-in at the Ellipse. It will be followed by a concert by country musicians The Zac Brown Band. On Sunday night, seven bouts will kick off at the venue, which will also be the primary attraction.
Disassembly of the installations will reportedly begin the next day.
