The NHS lists a range of symptoms associated with type 2 diabetes, with more than a million people throughout the country believed to be living with the condition without a formal diagnosis.
Type 2 diabetes occurs when a hormone called insulin fails to function properly or the body does not produce sufficient quantities of it.
This results in blood glucose (sugar) levels becoming excessively elevated. It primarily affects adults, though children can also develop it.
Type 2 diabetes can be managed through dietary changes and exercise, or with medication.
Certain individuals face a heightened risk of developing type 2 diabetes. Your risk may be increased if you’re white and aged over 40, or aged over 25 and from a South Asian, Chinese, Black African or Black Caribbean ethnic background.
Additional at-risk groups include those with a parent or sibling who has the condition, individuals who are overweight and lead sedentary lifestyles, and those with a pre-existing condition that elevates risk, such as high blood pressure.
The most frequently reported symptoms of type 2 diabetes include persistent fatigue, unexplained weight loss, constant thirst, and increased urination.
The NHS also identifies several other, less commonly recognised symptoms, including blurred vision.
Further warning signs can include cuts or wounds that are slow to heal, and/or itching around the genital area, or recurring episodes of thrush.
Signs may emerge slowly, although not all individuals with type 2 diabetes experience obvious symptoms.
According to NHS guidance, you should arrange a GP consultation if you suspect you or your child might have type 2 diabetes, or if either of you face an elevated risk of developing the condition.
