21 Years Later, Sequel to Keanu Reeves’ Cult-Classic Fantasy Thriller Is Officially Still Happening

Keanu Reeves is one of the biggest stars in the world, thanks to memorable roles in films such as Bill and Ted’s Excellent Adventure, The Matrix, and the John Wick series. Reeves’ upcoming projects include reprising his role as Shadow the Hedgehog in Sonic the Hedgehog 4, a lead role in Ruben Östlund’s dark satire The Entertainment System is Down, and starring in a potential new action franchise, Kill Current: A Jon Hendricks Thriller. One long-in-development Reeves project, a sequel to his 2005 film Constantine, just received a positive update.

Deadline reports that Warner Bros. is still developing Constantine 2 under Skydance Pictures co-chairs Dana Goldberg and Josh Greenstein. With other DC adaptations like Batman: Brave and the Bold, Wonder Woman, Teen Titans, and Swamp Thing listed as being in early development, this implies Constantine 2 is further along. Other notable titles listed as in development at Warner Bros. include movies with release dates such as Gremlins 3 (Oct. 6, 2028) and Game of Thrones: Aegon’s Conquest (Jun. 1, 2029).

Constantine was directed by Francis Lawrence (The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping) and was an adaptation of the Hellblazer comic series from DC Comics’ Vertigo imprint. Keanu Reeves stars as John Constantine, a cynical exorcist who can perceive and communicate with half-angels and half-demons on Earth. The film opened on Feb. 18, 2005, and grossed $230.9 million worldwide. While Constantine got mixed-to-negative reviews at release, sitting at 46% on Rotten Tomatoes, it gained a cult following.

In 2022, following Reeves’ career renaissance thanks to John Wick, Warner Bros. put Constantine 2 into development. The movie remained in development through many Warner Bros. changes, including the appointment of James Gunn and Peter Safran as heads of DC Studios in November 2022. Gunn said that Constantine 2 would be produced by DC Studios, but would be part of the DC Elseworlds branding alongside The Batman and Joker. In February 2025, Reeves confirmed the project was moving forward.

Even though Deadline reports that Constantine 2 is still in development, that could change. The Paramount-Warner Bros. merger is still early, so new management could scrap any project in development. That happened under the previous Warner Bros. regime, when David Zaslav canceled Wonder Twins months before cameras were set to roll and completely shelved a filmed Batgirl film. Yet with a big-name star like Keanu Reeves attached, Constantine 2 could be considered a priority film for the studio.

If Constantine 2 gets made the way Reeves and Lawrence are describing, how likely are you to watch it?
