Is On Call Part Of The One Chicago Universe? Series Creator Responds

On Call series creator Elliot Wolf has explained whether Wolf Entertainment’s latest streaming series takes place in the shared One Chicago universe. The Prime Video series is the first from the production company to be a half-hour per episode, focused on officer Traci Harmon (Troian Bellisario) and rookie Alex Diaz (Brandon Larracuente) as they respond to calls in Long Beach, California. The procedural style is similar to other shows produced by the studio, including those that fall under the Law & Order, One Chicago and FBI umbrellas, created by Dick Wolf. These three franchises also connect in the same universe.

Speaking with Variety, Wolf explained that On Call does not currently take place in the same universe as his father’s franchises, One Chicago, Law & Order, and FBI. However, the series creator is open to the idea. He explained how it could still work even though actors like Monica Raymund, who plays Gabby Dawson in Chicago Fire, appear in different roles on the show, citing how Wolf Entertainment’s other series reuse actors. However, he does admit it would take monumental effort for its placement to become canon. Check out what Wolf had to say below:

They never are until they are…. I think that there’s a lot of people who would have to figure a lot of stuff out if that were to ever happen, but we’re on the west coast. It’s a flight away. We’ll see.

What Wolf’s Statement Means For On Call’s One Chicago Connection

Dick Wolf’s shows all take place in the same universe, with some One Chicago crossovers also happening with Law & Order, Law & Order: SVU, and one with FBI. Although some actors portray different characters across the franchise, like Jesse Lee Soffer playing Jay Halstead in Chicago P.D. and Wesley Mitchell in FBI: International, the stories still maintain their in-universe connection. Because of this, Raymund’s appearance as a cop who gets killed in one episode doesn’t deter On Call from a possible future connection to the others.

Lori Loughlin and Eriq La Salle discuss their prior work on crime television, their On Call characters’ dynamic, and what “one call” changed it all.

However, there is some trickiness to the situation, given the other shows air weekly on TV networks, while Wolf’s series is exclusive to Prime Video. This doesn’t mean the cast of On Call couldn’t appear on a One Chicago show, for instance, but distribution rights and ownership would make it more difficult for all the series to connect. It’s not impossible, since FBI being on CBS didn’t stop Hailey Upton (Tracy Spiridakos) from NBC’s Chicago P.D. from appearing in one episode. But it hasn’t happened since, signaling the unlikely nature of such a crossover again.

Our Take On Whether On Call Belongs In The One Chicago Universe

It’s So Far-Removed It Could Work Either Way

Because there aren’t any other shows in Wolf Entertainment’s shared universe that take place in Long Beach, California, On Call doesn’t need to have any direct connections to other shows. However, even if it does, the unique, singular location of the series contrasted with all the other ones spread across the United States means a crossover is very unlikely. Perhaps future seasons can have throwaway lines revealing its placement in the shared universe, without making it something the series relies on all that much. Even if a crossover would be exciting to see.
