Warner Bros. Discovery has reportedly agreed to provide outtakes from Russell Brand‘s 2011 Arthur as evidence in his sexual assault case. According to The Times, the company’s attorney, Patrick Lamparello, appeared in front of the New York Supreme Court last week and said the company had “some hours of video outtake footage… four or five hours, it could be more, around eight.” This development in the US case coincides with Brand facing a criminal investigation in the United Kingdom, where he was charged on April 4, 2025, by the Metropolitan Police in London with multiple sexual offenses allegedly occurring between 1999 and 2005 involving four women.
Brand’s UK investigation charges include rape, indecent assault, oral rape, and two counts of sexual assault. UK police began their investigation in 2023 following several complaints. Brand has publicly denied all the allegations: in a short video posted on his Instagram, Brand thanked his fans for their messages and asserted his relationships were consensual. He is scheduled to appear at Westminster Magistrates’ Court in London for his first hearing on Friday, May 2, 2025.
The Arthur footage is relevant to a US suit filed in New York’s Suffolk County in 2023 by a woman identified as Jane Doe, who claims the actor sexually assaulted her in a restroom and exposed his penis to her on the set of the film. During the New York hearing, Brand’s legal team attempted to postpone the proceedings, arguing for a conflict with his ongoing criminal case in the UK. The appointed judge denied that request. Brand’s lawyer, Mark Cuccaro, told the court that Brand had a “reasonable belief criminal prosecution is possible in the U.S. based on allegations tantamount to criminal sexual misconduct occurring in the US, of which he has been falsely accused both by this civil plaintiff and several others through the media.”
Russell Brand’s Career
2011’s Arthur is a remake of the 1981 film of the same name starring Dudley Moore and Liza Minelli. Brand stars as the titular character, a wealthy playboy who risks losing his inheritance if he doesn’t marry Jennifer Garner’s Susan. Instead, Arthur falls for another woman, Naomi (Greta Gerwig), whose free-spirited nature starkly contrasts Susan’s. The comedy follows Arthur’s struggle to choose between his inheritance and true love, with his nanny, Hobson (Helen Mirren), there to provide unconventional guidance. The film received largely negative reviews and disappointed at the box office.
Brand began his career as a stand-up comedian and MTV VJ before gaining UK fame hosting Big Brother’s Big Mouth. He later transitioned to film, becoming well-known for roles in Forgetting Sarah Marshall, Get Him to the Greek, Rock of Ages, and Arthur. He also voiced characters in animated films like Despicable Me, its sequel, and Minions: The Rise of Gru. Beyond acting, Brand has worked on radio for BBC and hosting podcasts. He is also a published author known for his memoir My Booky Wook, which chronicles his life from childhood through his early struggles with drug addiction and his career in comedy and television.
