Buy WestJet Points with a 60% Bonus

WestJet has released its latest promotion for purchasing WestJet points (WSP), during which members can buy WestJet points with up to a 60% bonus. The sale is in effect as of June 5, 2025, and runs through to June 25, 2025, at 11:59pm Eastern Time.

In some cases, buying points from loyalty programs during a sale can make sense, since you can strategically “buy low and redeem high,” so to speak.

However, since WestJet Rewards is essentially a fixed-value points program with WestJet points worth 1 cent per point, it doesn’t really ever make sense to buy WestJet points, even during a sale like this.

Buy WestJet Points with a 60% Bonus

Outside of sales, you can normally buy WestJet points at a rate of 1 WestJet point = 2 cents (CAD), excluding taxes.

During this promotion, you’ll receive the maximum 60% bonus as long as you purchase at least 2,500 WestJet points.

With a 60% bonus, the cost per WestJet point drops to 1.25 cents per point (CAD).

We value WestJet points at 1 cent per point. Even if you purchase WestJet points with a 60% bonus, it’s still coming in well above our target valuation.

Plus, if you buy WestJet points with a Canadian billing address, you’ll also have to pay GST/HST on the amount of the purchase, since Points.com is registered in Canada. This further erodes any value of this sale, and drives up the cost even higher.

Therefore, if for any reason you want to buy WestJet points, it’s best to do so with a US billing address, since Canadian taxes won’t be levied on the transaction.

You can purchase up to 500,000 WSP in a calendar year, which is also the maximum possible amount you can purchase during this sale.

Before you consider buying WestJet points, it’s imperative to consider if it’s a good idea in the first place.

Is Buying WestJet Points a Good Deal?

Before you consider taking advantage of this promotion, it’s important to take stock of the WestJet Rewards loyalty program, and the value you can get from purchasing WestJet points.

WestJet points can be used to offset the base fare and Other Air Transportation Charges of a WestJet flight at a rate of 1 WestJet point = 1 cent (CAD). If you redeem them against the government-imposed taxes and fees, the value drops down to 0.91–0.95 cents per point.

In the vast majority of cases, you can’t get any more value than 1 cent per WestJet point. This is in contrast to many other loyalty programs, with which you can get significantly greater value by booking flights with loyalty points instead of cash.

Therefore, it doesn’t really make sense to pay more for WestJet points, since you’d get a better deal by paying cash for your flights instead. In other words, why pay 1.25 cents for something that’s worth just 1 cent?

What About Member Exclusive Fares?

Another feature of the WestJet Rewards program is Member Exclusive Fares, which offer a small discount compared to the regular cash rates.

It’s important to note that you need to be able to cover 100% of the Member Exclusive Fare’s base fare and Other ATC fees with WestJet points to be eligible for whatever discount is being offered.

This means that if you don’t have enough WestJet points in your account, you aren’t eligible for the Member Exclusive Fare. Your options would be to top up your account by purchasing WestJet points, or redeeming WestJet points against other fares, and paying the difference in cash.

To illustrate this, suppose you’d like to fly from Calgary to Montreal with WestJet, and you have 25,000 WestJet points in your account (worth $250). After entering your preferred date, you see the following breakdown of one-way fares.

The total cost with the Member Exclusive Fare is equivalent to $475.35 (CAD), while the total cost for the Econo fare is $545.43 (CAD).

Here, the Member Exclusive Fare offers a roughly 9% discount from the Econo fare, which is par for the course based on our analyses. While WestJet advertises Member Exclusive Fares offering up to 60% off, I’ve never seen anything even close to that.

If you have 25,000 WSP sitting in your account, you’d then need to purchase another 16,000 WSP to be able to cover the entire base fare and Other ATC.

Purchasing 16,000 WSP during this promotion costs $210 (CAD), with a 60% bonus included and 5% GST levied against the transaction.

Since you’d be on the hook for $67.10 (CAD) in taxes and fees with the Member Exclusive Fare, you’d wind up paying a total of $277.10 (CAD) out of pocket: $210 for the WestJet points, and $67.10 for the taxes and fees.

If you were to otherwise apply your 25,000 WSP to the total cost of the Econo fare and cover the remainder with cash, you’d have to pay an extra $295.43 (CAD) out-of-pocket after applying your WestJet points.

This winds up being just $18 (CAD) more than if you were to buy WestJet points to top up your account. While you’re saving a few dollars, you wouldn’t earn WestJet points on your Member Exclusive Fare booking, and it wouldn’t count towards Tier Qualifying Spend.

It goes to show that buying WestJet points, even with a discount or bonus, won’t result in any significant savings in the vast majority of cases, and you’re better off covering the difference with your credit card instead.

Conclusion

WestJet’s latest Buy WestJet points promotion is available until June 25, 2025, and you can get a 60% bonus when purchasing WestJet points.

Whenever promotions such as these come along, it’s important to consider if you stand to benefit from taking advantage of the sale. If you’re thinking about topping up your account, be sure to compare the cost with just paying the difference with your credit card, as you’re likely going to save money that way.

With the way that the WestJet Rewards program and the pricing of purchased WestJet points is structured, there aren’t really any cases in which it makes sense to buy WestJet points, even with a 60% bonus.
