President Trump promises UFC ‘championship fights’ on White House lawn for America 250 celebration

Independence Day is just a few hours away.

Indeed, there’s more to the fourth of July than mere hot dogs and missing fingers. Sometimes forgotten in all of the patriotic hubbub is the simple fact that the Declaration of Independence was signed on July 4, 1776. That’s exactly 249 years ago, which means next year will be the nice, round 250 year anniversary.

President Donald Trump intends to celebrate that anniversary in a major way for the next year, and perhaps a little surprisingly, he has plans to get UFC CEO Dana White and UFC athletes involved. During a press conference on Thursday, Trump announced that he intends to hold UFC fights on the White House lawn with a crowd of thousands watching live.

Check it out:

“We’re gonna have a UFC fight on the grounds of the White House. We have a lot of lands there. We’re gonna build a little — we’re not, Dana [White] is going to do it, Dana’s great, one of a kind. Gonna have a UFC fight, championship fight, full fight, like 20 or 25 thousand people, and we’re gonna do that as part of [America] 250 also. We’re gonna have some incredible events, some professional events, some amateur events, but the UFC fights are gonna be a big deal.”

President Trump is no stranger to UFC fights. He’s in attendance surprisingly often, and if Trump himself isn’t available, there’s usually a member of his politic cabinet in attendance. The promotion and president have a long history together, so it’s not necessarily a major surprise for them to collaborate.

It remains to be seen if these White House fights materialize of course. White famously hates outdoor venues, and it wouldn’t be the first time an exotic location has been promised and then underdelivered. We might just end up with the UFC Apex adorned with a few extra American flags and sparklers!

If it all does come together, what UFC fighters should be on the card? I just know Colby Covington is already begging for the opportunity
