SpaceX’s Starship explodes during ascent in its seventh test flight

0

The Starship’s seventh test flight ended in an explosion when the vehicle’s upper stage “experienced a rapid unscheduled disassembly during its ascent burn” over the Atlantic Ocean. SpaceX chief Elon Musk posted a video of the event, with debris streaking across and lighting up the sky. During the company’s webcast, Dan Huot from SpaceX’s communications team said they “saw engines dropping out on telemetry” by the end of the ascent burn and that they ultimately lost contact with the Ship, which is what the company calls the vehicle’s upper stage. SpaceX said in a tweet that it will continue reviewing data from the test to understand the explosion’s root cause.

The Federal Aviation Administration issued an advisory for pilots after the incident, warning them about falling debris in certain areas. SpaceX said before the test that it’s meant to “launch a new generation ship with significant upgrades” and it was supposed to conduct Starship’s first payload deployment test with the help of 10 Starlink simulators.

Despite the Starship’s upper stage burning up, the test was still partially a success. The Ship’s Raptor engines fired up during the ascent burn before the ground team lost contact with it around 8 minutes into the flight. SpaceX was also able to retrieve the Super Heavy booster, catching the vehicle’s first stage with the mechanical arms on its Starbase launch tower.

Biden Blows Trump Away In Unedited Interview With Lawrence O’Donnell

PoliticusUSA is now ad-free and big tech-free, but in order to be an independent platform, we need reader support. If you can, please support us by becoming a subscriber.

What stood out about Lawrence O’Donnell’s interview with Joe Biden was just how wrong so many of the media-created Republican-fueled narratives were about the President.

Donald Trump rarely does live interviews. When Trump does do an interview, it is almost always taped and edited. This fact is why it was important that Lawrence O’Donnell’s interview with Joe Biden was shown unedited to the American people.

Watch some of these clips and you can see that the Biden that Trump and the media sold was not the same man as the President.

Here is Biden on what concerns him:

Biden says Trump had nothing to do with the Gaza ceasefire:

Biden goes in-depth about how he rebuilt NATO and stopped Putin from overrunning Ukraine:

Biden said his biggest mistake was focusing too much on policy and not enough on politics:

Democratic voters were told that the person they chose as their nominee was in cognitive decline and could not serve another term as president. Democratic elites gave into Republican fearmongering about Biden’s age and tossed him off of the ticket.

However, the Joe Biden in this interview did not sound like a person in cognitive decline. In fact, Biden sounds light years more lucid than Trump does in his taped and heavily managed Fox News interviews. Fox News even gives Trump the questions before interviews, and he still doesn’t sound as together as Biden.

Lawrence O’Donnell’s interview was also an indictment of the rest of the mainstream media.

The media was so busy trying to prove that Biden was old and asking stupid questions that Biden never got to show the depth of his intelligence as he did in the conversation with O’Donnell.

We will never know if Joe Biden would have come back and won reelection in 2024. Democratic elites and the corporate media robbed Democratic voters of the ability to ever get that answer.

However, President Biden did an unedited, nearly hour-long interview that blew anything that Donald Trump will do over the next four years out of the water.

What do you think of Biden’s conversation with Lawrence O’Donnell? Share your thoughts in the comments below.

Power Plant in Moss Landing, CA Erupts in Flames, Triggers Immediate Evacuation Order Over Toxic Air Hazard | The Gateway Pundit

0

A fire erupted at the Moss Landing Power Plant in Monterey County on Thursday afternoon, prompting evacuation orders and the closure of State Route 1.

The incident began around 3 p.m. at a battery storage facility operated by Vistra Energy, according to CBS News.

In response, the Monterey County Sheriff’s Office issued evacuation orders for areas south of Elkhorn Slough, north of Molera Road and Monterey Dunes Way, and west of Castroville Boulevard and Elkhorn Road to the ocean.

Authorities also advised nearby residents to close windows and doors, shut off air systems, and stay indoors to minimize exposure to potential hazardous materials.

The California Highway Patrol closed State Route 1 at Salinas Road, with no estimated time for reopening.

Fire crews, EMS, and HAZMAT responded, seemingly letting the fire burn itself out due to its contained nature and the lack of nearby flammable structures.

The primary concern is now air quality due to the chemical composition of the smoke.

Vistra Energy reported that all site personnel were safely evacuated and that the cause of the fire remains under investigation.

In a statement to KRON4, Vistra Energy releases the following:

There is an ongoing fire at our Moss Landing Power Plant site. Our top priority is the safety of the community and our personnel, and Vistra deeply appreciates the continued assistance of our local emergency responders.

Earlier this afternoon, Vistra personnel called for assistance from the North Monterey County Fire District after a fire was detected in the 300-MW Phase I energy storage facility at the Moss Landing Power Plant site. All site personnel were safely evacuated.

The cause of the fire has not yet been determined, but an investigation will begin once the fire is extinguished.

In the United States, Donald Trump’s return to power is worrying undocumented immigrants and the groups that support them. Memories of mass deportations, detention centres and the systematic separation of children from their parents at the border during Trump’s first term are still vivid in people’s minds. So what will his second term mean for immigration? In California, “sanctuary cities” like Los Angeles, San Francisco and Berkeley are bracing for the human and economic impact of potential mass deportations targeting two million undocumented immigrants in California alone. Our US West Coast correspondents report.

China’s economy grows by 5% but people remain worried about future job prospects | World News

0

China has released a slew of economic data this morning, showing its economy grew last year by a solid 5% percent, meeting the government’s target.

Other annual figures released show that total retail sales of consumer goods were up by 3.5% last year, compared to 2023.

But despite these positive indicators China’s economy is still facing challenges from the real estate crisis fallout, people are concerned about their job prospects and there is a reluctance to spend money domestically.

The misty megacity of Chongqing in southern China (population 32 million people) is a good place to take the temperature of the country’s economy.

Cathy Zhou and her mother Mrs Deng stuffed dumplings while describing their economic worries to Sky News.

Cathy has been unemployed since the end of COVID-19. She said she can’t find a job that pays her enough to live on and that salaries have halved.

“I used to be the headmaster of a training school,” Ms Zhou said. “Some of my friends have been at home for one or two years, looking for jobs, but can’t find any. They stay home, get some hope and look again.”

She added: “Before my friends would tell me they buy bags, buy clothes, but now they are shopping less and everyone is saving.”

Ms Zhou’s retired mother Mrs Deng worked in a factory for almost 30 years.

“The younger generation have less stable jobs, if they lose it they still need to pay their mortgage, so we have to save money to help them,” she said.

With Chinese New Year around the corner, the government is trying to boost consumer demand.

It’s expanded a list of subsidies to encourage people to trade in old electric products, like rice cookers and televisions, for new ones.

Last year, China announced a massive economic stimulus package to buy local government debt worth $1.4trn (£1.15trn) over five years.

On New Years Eve, China’s President Xi Jinping said: “China’s economy has rebounded and is on an upward trajectory.”

But President Xi also acknowledged there is deep worry too.

“The concerns of the people about jobs and incomes, elderly and childcare, education and medical services are always on my mind,” the president said. “This year, basic pension has been raised, and mortgage rates have dropped.”

The other concern for China has been stubbornly high youth unemployment as almost one in five can’t find a job.

Economic analyst at the Economic Intelligence Unit, Xu Tianchen, said: “I think the government is quite worried because if unemployment continues to grow, it will lead to issues with social instability and that is not something the government would tolerate.”

In 2023, President Xi told young people they would need to accept the hardship and “eat bitterness”.

But now the government appears to be softening its message and looking for levers to pull to create jobs and boost consumption.

Over a plate of steaming dumplings, Ms Zhou said: “I don’t think there is any ‘obvious’ results coming out of eating bitterness.”

Her best friend Pipi agreed: “If you want to get to the next level, you have to work harder and put in more effort than other people or you will just fall behind.”

TAIPEI, Taiwan — China’s population fell last year for the third straight year, its government said Friday, pointing to further demographic challenges for the world’s second most populous nation, which is now facing both an aging population and an emerging shortage of working age people.

China’s population stood at 1.408 billion at the end of 2024, a decline of 1.39 million from the previous year.

The figures announced by the government in Beijing follow trends worldwide, but especially in East Asia, where Japan, South Korea, Hong Kong and other nations have seen their birth rates plummet. China three years ago joined Japan and most of Eastern Europe among other nations whose population is falling.

The reasons are in many cases similar: Rising costs of living are causing young people to put off or rule out marriage and child birth while pursuing higher education and careers. While people are living longer, that’s not enough to keep up with rate of new births.

Countries such as China that allow very little immigration are especially at risk.

China has long been among the world’s most populous nations, enduring invasions, floods and other natural disasters to sustain a population that thrived on rice in the south and wheat in the north. Following the end of World War II and the Communist Party’s rise to power in 1949, large families re-emerged and the population doubled in just three decades, even after tens of millions died in the Great Leap Forward that sought to revolutionize agriculture and industry and the Cultural Revolution that followed a few years later.

After the end of the Cultural Revolution and leader Mao Zedong’s death, Communist bureaucrats began to worry the country’s population was outstripping its ability to feed itself and began implementing a draconian “one child policy.” Though it was never law, women had to apply for permission to have a child and violators could face forced late-term abortions and birth control procedures, massive fines and the prospect of their child being deprived an identification number, effectively making them non-citizens.

Rural China, where the preference for male offspring was especially strong and two children were still ostensibly allowed, became the focus of government efforts, with women forced to present evidence they were menstruating and buildings emblazoned with slogans such as “have fewer children, have better children.”

The government sought to stamp out selective abortion of female children, but with abortions legal and readily available, those operating illicit sonogram machines enjoyed a thriving business.

That has been the biggest factor in China’s lopsided sex ratio, with as many as millions more boys born for every 100 girls, raising the possibility of social instability among China’s army of bachelors. Friday’s report gave the sex imbalance as 104.34 men to every 100 women, though independent groups give the imbalance as considerably higher.

More disturbing for the government was the drastically falling birthrate, with China’s total population dropping for the first time in decades in 2023 and China being narrowly overtaken by India as the world’s most populous nation in the same year. A rapidly aging population, declining workforce, lack of consumer markets and migration abroad are putting the system under severe pressure.

While spending on the military and flashy infrastructure projects continues to rise, China’s already frail social security system is teetering, with increasing numbers of Chinese refusing to pay into the underfunded pension system.

Already, more than one-fifth of the population is aged 60 or over, with the official figure given as 310.3 million or 22% of the total population. By 2035, this number is forecast to exceed 30%, sparking discussion of changes to the official retirement age, which one of the lowest in the world. With fewer students, some vacant schools and kindergartens are meanwhile being transformed into care facilities for older people.

Such developments are giving some credence to the aphorism that China, now the world’s second largest economy but facing major headwinds, will “grow old before it grows rich.”

Government inducements including cash payouts for having up to three children and financial help with housing costs have had only temporary effects.

Meanwhile, China continued its transition to an urban society, with 10 million more people moving to cities for an urbanization rate of 67%, up almost a percentage point from the previous year.

L.A. County D.A. hires special prosecutor for police misconduct

0

The L.A. County Board of Supervisors approved the hiring of a new special prosecutor to look into police misconduct cases this week, less than a month after Dist. Atty. Nathan Hochman moved to fire the person his predecessor named to that post.

Michael Gennaco, an ex-federal prosecutor who once headed L.A. County’s Office of Independent Review and has conducted oversight of troubled agencies such as the Department of Children and Family Services and the county Sheriff’s Department, made his first appearance on behalf of the district attorney’s office in a downtown courtroom Wednesday. His contract was approved by the board Tuesday, and Hochman announced the move Thursday.

Michael Gennaco, pictured at a 2006 news conference, will handle two high-profile cases. It is not clear whether he would be reviewing other cases or looking at incoming instances of alleged police misconduct or brutality.

(Ric Francis / Associated Press)

Gennaco will replace Lawrence Middleton, whom former Dist. Atty. George Gascón hired in 2021 to reexamine a number of controversial police shootings that the district attorney’s office previously declined to prosecute. Middleton brought just one case to court in all that time, though The Times reported last year that he had obtained a warrant to arrest an ex-LAPD officer in another case.

In an interview, Gennaco said Hochman contacted him after defeating Gascón and asked him to take over Middleton’s caseload. It was not clear if Gennaco would be reviewing other cases or looking at incoming instances of alleged police misconduct or brutality, which are normally handled by the office’s Justice Systems Integrity Division.

“I’ve got to figure out where the cases are, procedurally, substantively, factually and then figure out where to go,” he said.

Middleton was informed that his contract had been terminated on Jan. 7, according to a county spokeswoman. He declined to comment.

The move marked a change in stance by Hochman, who repeatedly attacked Gascón’s hiring of a special prosecutor on the campaign trail and questioned the need for such a position. Records show Middleton billed the county for just over $1 million between June 2021 and October 2024, a figure that infuriated rank-and-file prosecutors. Gennaco’s contract is set to last 18 months, though Hochman has the ability to extend it.

Hochman did not respond to a list of questions about Genacco’s hiring, but his office issued statement Thursday saying the appointment reflects the new D.A.’s “unwavering commitment to justice, accountability and public trust.”

“Our goal is to ensure transparency and accountability while strengthening public confidence in our justice system,” Hochman said. “Michael Gennaco’s extensive experience and expertise in civil rights cases will be invaluable as we continue to reevaluate prior decisions and take a fresh look at cases involving officer-involved shootings.”

Miriam Krinsky — a former federal prosecutor and founder of Fair and Just Prosecution, a nonprofit that advocates for criminal justice reform — praised Gennaco as an important hire for Hochman, who has faced questions about his appetite to prosecute police given his broad support among law enforcement unions.

“He is tenacious. He has as much familiarity with police oversight as anyone in California. He has tremendous integrity. He’s very committed to this work,” Krinsky said. “If you look at what he has done through his career … he knows how to navigate the challenges of these cases.”

Gennaco and Hochman worked together in the U.S. attorney’s office in Los Angeles for years, where Gennaco prosecuted a number of high-profile civil rights and police misconduct cases before he was named to head L.A. County’s newly formed Office of Independent Review in 2001.

For more than a decade, that office looked into issues of jail violence and excessive force, detailing shortcomings in the way the Sheriff’s Department investigated deaths in the jails and improving the agency’s internal disciplinary measures, according to a report from the county’s Citizens Commission On Jail Violence in 2012.

In recent years, Gennaco has conducted audits and reviews of use-of-force cases in Burbank and Anaheim. He also said he reviewed some force cases for Gascón.

Gennaco and his former office have also faced some criticism for not doing enough to uncover patterns of abuse that exploded into the public eye when the FBI launched a probe that eventually ended in the conviction of former Sheriff Lee Baca, for whom Hochman once served as defense counsel. Some members of the Board of Supervisors also questioned if Gennaco and the board had been “compromised” and lacked independence from the Sheriff’s Department.

Gennaco said anyone who questioned his commitment to police accountability should simply check his resume.

“I’m certainly not shy about criticizing police departments when criticism is due, and complimenting them when it’s not,” he said. “I try to play it down the line.”

Speed up your workflow by using ChatGPT in Apple Notes

0

ChatGPT is OpenAI’s extremely useful chatbot for answering questions. Here’s how to use the generative AI tool in Apple’s Notes app in macOS.

Apple Intelligence is now integrated with OpenAi’s ChatGPT in macOS, ad well as iOS and iPadOS. Many features of ChatGPT are integrated with Apple apps starting in macOS Sequoia 15.1, and iOS and iPadOS 18.2.

While Apple has stated support for Apple Intelligence and ChatGPT are evolving and still in progress, some features are working and included in Apple’s operating systems. Expect a further phased rollout of Apple Intelligence and ChatGPT in the near future.

For a complete review of new Apple Intelligence iOS and iPadOS features, see our article iOS 18.1 & iPadOS 18.1 review: baby steps with Apple Intelligence.

In order to use ChatGPT in Notes, you have to have a subscription to ChatGPT Plus ($20/month), Pro, Enterprise, Team, or Educational. OpenAI has stated support for ChatGPT free tier integration in macOS will be coming later in 2025.

OpenAI has a pricing page, and at $20/month, the Plus tier is fairly reasonable. Plus or higher also gives you access to o1 and o1-mini models.

If you already have Apple Intelligence and the ChatGPT extension enabled, skip to the last section “Using ChatGPT in Notes”. Even so, the next section below has some useful info on where ChatGPT is available in Apple apps.

What’s included

In the above versions of Apple’s operating systems, Apple states Apple Intelligence is integrated into Notes, Photos, Siri, Safari, and other apps with Writing Tools. ChatGPT is also integrated into some of the apps.

For example, you can now use ChatGPT prompts in Siri for lookups. Apple Intelligence Writing Tools work anywhere there is a text field.

Writing Tools include summarizing text, rewriting text, proofreading, and even composing text. Apple also provides summaries in the form of Notification summaries, web page summaries, and others.

Summaries for web pages in browsers are particularly useful. Some third-party browsers such as Firefox also support summaries.

You can turn off Notification summaries separately in System Settings->Notifications->Summarize Notifications.

Apple promises that using Apple Intelligence does not send your data to Apple (although some parts of Siri can still require this).

Turning on Apple Intelligence

Before you can use ChatGPT in Apple’s apps you must first turn on Apple Intelligence in the System Settings app (or the Settings app in iOS).

To do so, open System Settings in the /Applications folder on your Startup Disk (or from the Apple menu), then scroll down and click on Apple Intelligence & Siri on the left.

Next, on the right, click Get Apple Intelligence to begin the setup process. After clicking the button it will be replaced with text reading “In Progress…” while the additional software is downloaded and installed.

This may take a while (up to an hour or more on some Macs).

Wait for Apple Intelligence to install and set up.

Once that is completed, you’ll get a notification that your Mac is ready to use Apple Intelligence. The System Settings button will reappear, but this time it reads Set Up Apple Intelligence.

Clicking that button displays a sheet that walks you through setting up each feature of Apple Intelligence. This is not unlike the sheets that appear when you set up a new Mac.

The first step is choosing which apps use summaries. You can skip this part by clicking Set Up Later if you don’t want summaries.

Clicking
Click “Set Up Apple Intelligence” to get started.

Next, you’ll step through Siri setup, but mind that there’s no way to opt-out on the sheet at this point. The setup notifies you that Siri may send some of your data to Apple (including audio), but that the data is not tied to your Apple account.

Click Continue, then select a Siri Voice from the list provided. Click Continue again.

Now the sheet gives you a chance to opt out of sending your data to Apple if you want. Click Not now to opt-out, then click Continue.

Apple Intelligence and Siri are now fully enabled and you can turn either off or back on by using the two sliders that appear in System Settings. Also now enabled at the bottom of the Apple Intelligence & Siri pane is an Extensions section, one of which is for ChatGPT:

Use the sliders in System Settings to turn Apple Intelligence and Siri on or off.
Apple Intelligence installed and enabled in macOS Sequoia.

Turning on ChatGPT

Go ahead and click ChatGPT under Extensions to set up ChatGPT. There’s also a slider for determining if you want to allow Siri to recommend using ChatGPT in some instances.

Next, click the Set Up… button next to Use ChatGPT.

You’ll now get another sheet telling you what ChatGPT can do: integrate with Siri, compose text in Writing Tools, and work with a ChatGPT account. Click Next – which leads you to another sheet informing you that the Mac works with ChatGPT in a way that preserves your privacy:

  1. You decide what gets shared with ChatGPT
  2. You can turn ChatGPT off in System Settings any time
  3. You can use ChatGPT with an account, or use it anonymously

If you want to use ChatGPT with an account, click the Use ChatGPT with an Account button. Otherwise, click the Enable ChatGPT button to use it anonymously.

There's also a slider for enabling ChatGPT suggestion in Siri.
Click “Set Up…” to begin the setup of the ChatGPT extension.

There’s also a privacy note button that gives you a text summary of Apple’s and OpenAI’s policy on ChatGPT privacy in the extension. If you want, you can Select All (Command-A) on the text, copy it by Control-clicking, then paste it into a file in TextEdit or another editor for later review.

Of particular note are these paragraphs:

“If there is no explicit request to use ChatGPT, your request is analyzed to determine whether ChatGPT might have useful results. If it does, Siri will ask whether you would like to use ChatGPT. If you choose, Siri will send your request to ChatGPT and present the answer directly. You also can choose to disable Siri asking you to confirm whether Siri should send a request to ChatGPT by going to Settings > Apple Intelligence & Siri > ChatGPT, and tapping to turn off Confirm ChatGPT Requests.

When you use Writing Tools and visual intelligence with the Camera Control, you will be able to choose whether you would like to use the ChatGPT extension for each of these features separately.”

The note then goes on to explain that, in anonymous mode, it is OpenAI’s official policy that it must not store requests, or their results (unless required by law), and it must not use requests to train its models. Attached documents are also not stored in anonymous mode.

In anonymous mode, OpenAI does not receive any info about your Apple account, and your IP address is hidden from OpenAI servers. General location information is however sent for the purposes of “enabling ChatGPT to prevent fraud and comply with applicable law”.

You can turn off ChatGPT and its interaction with Apple Intelligence in the Extensions pane at any time, in the same way that you turned it on. You can also leave Apple Intelligence and/or Siri turned on, even if you turn the ChatGPT extension off.

After you’ve read and understood the Privacy statement, return to the Extension pane, and click Enable ChatGPT. Once ChatGPT is enabled in System Settings, you can later click the Sign In button, and turn it off entirely using the slider.

OpenAI “Advanced Capabilities” are free up to a certain limit, then basic ChatGPT functionality is available until twenty-four hours have elapsed.

There’s also a slider for confirming Siri requests.

This completes the set up of both Apple Intelligence and the ChatGPT extension.

Using ChatGPT in Notes

Once Apple Intelligence and ChatGPT have been enabled, you can now use them in Writing Tools in any app that supports text editing – including the Notes app.

Currently to use ChatGPT/Notes integration you have to be signed into a ChatGPT account because OpenAI has to verify your paid pricing tier. If you’re not signed in, go back to the Extension pane in System Settings for ChatGPT and click the Sign In button.

You’ll also need to go to the Settings page for your ChatGPT account, enable the Works With Apps setting, then click Manage Apps to select which apps you want to allow ChatGPT to work with.

To use ChatGPT in Notes, open the Notes app, select any note on the left, then press Option+Shift+1 on your keyboard. This brings up the ChatGPT prompt in which you can type a question to get an answer for the information contained in the selected note.

If, for some reason, the Note can’t be processed, ChatGPT servers can’t be reached, or you’re not signed in to ChatGPT, you’ll hear the macOS system sound.

There’s also a voice mode you can enable to control ChatGPT.

What’s next?

ChatGPT integration with Apple apps is exciting because it promises to take automation to a whole new level. This includes lookups, summaries, editing, condensing, composing, and more.

What would really be cool would be for Apple to provide some other automation features from a UI standpoint (much like AppleScript does today). For example, one could imagine telling ChatGPT to select all notes with certain titles or content, and then merging them, condensing their content, removing parts of content, or sending them somewhere else.

Voice control combined with UI interaction could be really powerful.

Imagine having one hundred notes in the Notes app and telling ChatGPT to “Merge all notes containing Apple-related content”. That could save hours.

The possibilities may be endless.

How Was Lego’s ‘Twilight’ Set Created?

Lego’s Twilight set was created by a Lego fan named Nick Micheel, believe it or not. The Lego enthusiast sent in his application for the toy company’s Ideas program. The creative program was first launched in 2023, through the collaboration of Lionsgate and Lego, according to Decider. Nick’s submission got more than 10,000 votes online, which made him the winner of the unique contest.

Nick shared the inspiration behind his concept with Lego Ideas: “I just thought it would be so funny to translate this movie and these characters into LEGO form.  I am a huge fan of the LEGO Batman Movie and how it demonstrates a masterful ability to infuse humor into otherwise melodramatic themes, and I thought that Twilight would work so well in a similar way. Just as with LEGO building, I came out of my Twilight dark age as an adult. However, I was not a Twilight fan as a child.  At some point, I started to find myself always suggesting Twilight as a movie option with my wife and our friends, to the point that they knew it was coming every time.  My wife and I had a phase where we would watch the movies on repeat to the point where I could recite the film script as easily as reciting Shakespeare.”
