Wayne Osmond, original Osmond Brothers singer, dead at 73

0

Wayne Osmond, the second-eldest sibling in the Osmond Brothers group of singers, has died. He was 73.

The baritone-voiced singer and guitarist, who was the fourth oldest of the nine Osmond children and older brother to famed duo Donny and Marie Osmond, “passed away peacefully” Wednesday surrounded by his wife and five children, his daughter Amy Osmond Cook said Thursday in a statement posted on Facebook. The family also launched a celebration of life page on the platform to memorialize the late musician.

“His legacy of faith, music, love, and laughter have influenced the lives of many people around the world. He would want everyone to know that the gospel of Jesus Christ is true, that families are forever, and that banana splits are the best dessert. We love him and will miss him dearly,” his daughter’s statement said.

Osmond’s younger brother, Donny Osmond, confirmed Thursday that he died from a stroke.

“I’m so grateful that I had the opportunity to visit him in the hospital before he passed,” the “Donny & Marie” star and Las Vegas headliner wrote on Instagram.

“Wayne brought so much light, laughter, and love to everyone who knew him, especially me. He was the ultimate optimist and was loved by everyone,” Donny added. “I’m sure I speak on behalf of every one of us siblings when I state that we were fortunate to have Wayne as a brother. Even though we are separated in this mortal life, I know that by the grace and resurrection of our Savior, Jesus Christ, we will have the opportunity to be with Wayne for eternity. I love you, Wayne.”

Wayne Osmond, born Melvin Wayne Osmond in Ogden on Aug. 28, 1951, wed Kathlyn White in 1974. The multi-instrumentalist had surgery for a brain tumor in 1997, suffered a stroke in 2012 that left him unable to play guitar and also was treated for cancer, according to the Hollywood Reporter. But he famously reunited with his siblings in 2019 to sing with his brothers for sister Marie’s 60th birthday.

Representatives for Marie Osmond did not immediately respond Thursday to The Times’ requests for comment.

Brother Merrill Osmond said on Facebook that Wayne Osmond recently had “a massive stroke” and that he was being treated at a Salt Lake City hospital. Wayne “endured much” and “gave it his all,” he said, and praised his brother’s “genius in his ability to write music” and “capture the hearts of millions of people and bring them closer to God.”

“My brother was a saint before he came into this world, and he will leave as an even greater saint than he came in,” Merrill Osmond wrote Thursday on Facebook. “I’ve never known a man that had more humility. A man with absolute no guile. An individual that was quick to forgive and had the ability to show unconditional love to everyone he ever met.

“His departure from this earth will be a sad moment for some, but for those who are waiting for him on the other side, there will be a massive celebration beyond anything we can imagine,” he added.

Wayne’s younger brother Jay Osmond also said Thursday that he was “deeply saddened” by the death and that “a true legend has left the Earth.”

“It is said that where there is great love there is great grief as we part during our earthly journey. Throughout my life I have always felt most connected to Wayne out of all of my siblings. He was my roommate and my confidant over the decades,” he wrote on Facebook.

Jay Osmond said that when he visited his brother last week, Wayne Osmond was sad that he could no longer fly a plane and that “flying brought him peace.”

“What gives me joy is to know that my brother ‘Wings’ has earned his wings and I can only imagine the heights he is soaring right now. The reunion he must’ve had with Father and Mother I’m sure was spectacular!” he said.

Family patriarch George Osmond, a soldier who launched his children’s entertainment careers in the late 1950s, died in 2007. He was predeceased by his wife, Olive Osmond, in 2004.

Both husband and wife passed on their affinity for music — George’s as a singer and Olive’s as a saxophone player — to their children and formed the Osmond Brothers troupe with sons Alan, Wayne, and Jay Osmond. (The couple’s two eldest sons, Virl and Tom, have degenerative hearing loss that affected their speech.) George taught the quartet how to sing four-part harmonies as children, and they performed for their Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints congregation in Ogden, Utah. They also performed at fairs and amusement parks in the late 1950s.

The family made its way to Los Angeles in 1962 to audition for “The Lawrence Welk Show” but didn’t land the gig. As a consolation, George Osmond took the family to Disneyland. The boys were dressed alike and the barbershop quartet performing on Main Street took notice. They were asked to do a number with the group; the performance ended up lasting for more than an hour. According to D23, the Osmonds then were brought to the Disneyland entertainment office, where they signed their first professional contract.

While they were performing at Disneyland, the father of singer Andy Williams spotted them and recommended the group to his son, ultimately leading the Osmond Brothers to book a five-year network TV run on “The Andy Williams Show.”.

The group added youngest brother Donny Osmond in 1963, changing its name to the Osmonds, and appeared on “The Jerry Lewis Show” before signing with a record label. They produced 34 gold and platinum records in the 1960s and ’70s, according to the Associated Press, including the 1971 chart-topper “One Bad Apple (Don’t Spoil the Whole Bunch).” Their other Billboard Hot 100 hits include “Down by the Lazy River,” “Yo-Yo,” “Love Me for a Reason” and “Crazy Horses.”

Donny and younger sister Marie also performed separately and as a duo to much success in music and television. Wayne made frequent appearances on the “Donny and Marie” variety show, which ran from 1975 to 1979 and which he also occasionally produced.

Lupe Fiasco & MIT Team Up for ‘A.I. Powered’ FM Radio Station

0

Lupe Fiasco is teaming up with the Massachusetts Institute of Technology to produce an FM radio station. There’s a catch, though: The project will be fully powered by artificial intelligence.

The Chicago rapper-turned-professor made the announcement on Instagram last week with a lengthy caption, which read in part: “Imagine if there was a 24-hour fully AI powered radio station trained on all the intricacies of my rapping abilities and was carefully refined to produce the highest quality possible Lupe Fiasco songs. Now imagine it only played a generated song once and never again endlessly…now imagine that radio station was only available for certain periods of time and only in certain locations and you needed an actual FM radio to hear the songs. Imagine I put a team together at MIT and imagine we actually built it…

“ENDLESS LUP coming soon,” he concluded the caption.

Lupe has been working with the prestigious school since 2022 when MIT tapped him to teach a course on Rap Theory and Practice for their MLK Visiting Professors and Scholars Program for the 2022-23 school year. And that’s not the only higher-learning establishment he’s been involved with: Fiasco was named a Saybrook Associate Fellow at Yale in 2023 and recently announced that he will be joining the Johns Hopkins University’s Peabody Institute faculty as a visiting professor to teach a rap course for their new Bachelor of Music in Hip Hop program.

Fiasco also announced a new multimedia venture in the same IG post about his collab with MIT. “RhymenShop is my multi-modal/multimedia creative musical sandbox,” he wrote. “RhymenShop’s ‘DCS’ or ‘Data Compression Services’ program is small batch, physical musical releases or ‘Flavors’ available only to holders of RhymenShop DCS USB Card’s or ‘Bowls’.”

He mentioned that the rollout for RhymenShop technically began during his Samurai Tour this past fall and that more details are to come.

NHS warns ‘see GP’ for common condition if you get bloating often

0

The NHS has issued a warning that persistent bloating, despite lifestyle changes such as dieting or exercising, could be a sign of a common condition that requires testing. However, if you notice an improvement, it’s crucial to maintain a careful diet.

As detailed on the NHS inform website, coeliac disease is a prevalent autoimmune disorder where the immune system in a person’s gut reacts when they consume gluten. This reaction causes chronic inflammation and can result in symptoms like bloating, fatigue, and a numbness and tingling sensation.

Gluten is a protein found in wheat, barley, and rye, and therefore appears in many everyday food and drink items. These include:

  • most types of bread
  • pasta
  • cakes
  • biscuits
  • crackers
  • many breakfast cereals
  • pastry
  • certain types of sauces
  • some types of ready meals
  • most beers and lagers
  • certain fruit squashes

Given these foods often form part of our daily diet and with coeliac disease affecting one in every 100 people, it’s worth noting the symptoms and whether they worsen after consuming any of the above items. This period of worsening symptoms is often referred to as a flare-up.

What are the symptoms of Coeliac disease?

Coeliac disease can trigger a range of symptoms in the digestive system and throughout the body. Symptoms can emerge at any stage of life, but coeliac disease is most frequently diagnosed between the ages of 40 and 60 years.

The symptoms of coeliac disease differ from individual to individual and can range from mild to severe. Some people may not experience any symptoms at all.

Some common symptoms of coeliac disease include:

  • severe diarrhoea, excessive wind and/or constipation
  • persistent or unexplained gastrointestinal symptoms, such as nausea and vomiting
  • recurrent stomach pain, cramping or bloating
  • iron, vitamin B12 or folic acid deficiency
  • anaemia
  • tiredness
  • sudden or unexpected weight loss (but not in all cases)
  • mouth ulcers
  • skin rash (dermatitis herpetiformis)
  • depression
  • repeated miscarriages
  • neurological (nerve) problems such as ataxia (loss of coordination, poor balance) and peripheral neuropathy (numbness and tingling in the hands and feet)

Sometimes the symptoms of coeliac disease are mistaken for:

  • irritable bowel syndrome (IBS)
  • wheat intolerance
  • stress
  • just getting older

The NHS warns that if you tick any of theses signs and symptoms thn you should talk to your GP. But do not stop eating gluten as you will need to eat gluten when getting tested to ensure an accurate result.

You can take Coeliac UK’s online assessment here to see whether you could have the common condition.

Ben Willoughby Sunny Marquis’ Below Deck Boatmance Timeline

0

Ben Willoughby and Sunny Marquis started dating during Season 11 of Below Deck. Their relationship developed from a boatmance into a serious romance once filming wrapped. But roughly one year later, this relationship walked the plank.

Thankfully, Sunny is returning to the exterior team for Season 12. But Ben is not, which makes sense, as he popped off on almost everyone once Season 11 took to the airwaves. However, Sunny and Ben were still dating while Sunny filmed for the next season sans her man. Therefore, we will likely hear his name at least once during the upcoming season of BD.

To help prepare us for this mess, let us look back at this boatmance shared by Sunny and Ben. From flirtations to frustrations (on repeat) to a fully-blown romance that perished on dry land, here is the timeline of Sunny and Ben.

Ben and Sunny struck up a rocky boatmance during Below Deck Season 11

When Sunny boarded the boat as a deckhand in Season 11, Ben looked her way several times. However, Ben also had lingering feelings for his Season 10 ex, Camille Lamb. Oh, and Paris Field, a stewardess in Season 11, also caught his eye.

Thankfully, when Ben reached out to Camille during Season 11 (while he was already involved with Sunny), Camille also said no to a possible rekindling, as this relationship had already sailed, in her correct opinion. In his confessional, Ben revealed that he did not share a spark with Sunny. This statement likely stung Sunny when this episode aired.

Likewise, Paris saw straight through Ben. She even appeared on Watch What Happens Live as their season aired, encouraging Sunny to end things with Ben. “He needs therapy,” Paris quipped, adding that Sunny needs to “get rid of Ben.”

Ben struggled with giving Sunny his one-on-one attention. Yet no matter what transpired on board, Sunny would always dry her eyes and return to Ben, ready to forgive her Bosun for his ill-spoken statements and handsy behaviors.

Following Below Deck Season 11, Ben and Sunny start dating

Once BD Season 11 wrapped, Ben took to his socials to announce that he and Sunny were still together. We would include his post here, but they have since split, so this lovesick nod no longer exists. Thankfully, we reported on these posts back when they occurred. Therefore, we can still easily share the relevant details with you now.

Ben wrote, “Yes, you guessed it, we are still together! Finally, we can let go of the secrecy” they had been hiding for the past 15 months. Ben further revealed that he and Sunny traversed “the globe together last year, and Sunny made her way to Australia for Christmas.”

Two months ago, Ben posted a TikTok reel that is shockingly still alive on his page (for now). His curated montage centered around his travels and time spent with Sunny. From late-night beach giggles to bike riding and skating, this duo seemed a decent enough fit.

But something must have still been amiss, as their break-up announcement sounded only a few weeks ago. Luckily for us nosey Nellies, we might learn more about what transpired shortly once Sunny returns to Bravo without Ben.

Sunny filmed for Below Deck Season 12 sans Ben

Below Deck Season 12 is bringing back Sunny, but not Ben. But remember, Sunny was still dating Ben when this season was filming, so a Season 12 FaceTime call might still occur, bringing Ben back into our lives whether we like it or not. But why is Ben no longer starring in this series? Let us recap thy ways now.

As a Bosun, Ben performed his job well. It was his interpersonal behaviors that sank his ship on Bravo. First, Ben seemed to love flirting and touching other females on board, which made Sunny cry. But somehow, her reactions to his piss-poor behaviors always got labeled as problematic “chick” antics by Ben, which, ew.

Sunny continually forgave Ben, but as the viewers, many of us struggled to do the same. Therefore, the vitriol that Ben received as Season 11 aired was high, especially once his combative scenes with Captain Kerry Titheradge transpired. To recap, Captain Kerry promoted Ben to a Bosun position, but he revealed in his confessional that Ben was not his first pick. This reveal sent Ben spirling, quipping, “Time will tell that man’s true character.”

Yet, time only showed Ben brushing off orders, speaking poorly about his captain and his other colleagues, and never once taking accountability for his behaviors. Therefore, we are unsurprised that Ben is no longer attached to this series.

Ben and Sunny broke up in December 2024

The Daily Dish managed to capture the fallout between Sunny and Ben online. Ben made this announcement via his Instagram Stories, which disappeared after 24 hours. “I need to kindly ask that people respect my space at this time and stop the negative comments and messages. It’s been a very difficult couple of weeks, and some things are private between two people,” Ben wrote.

Meanwhile, nothing says single and ready to mingle like thirst trap pictures posted around the holidays. So this is what Sunny did after she scrubbed her accounts of Ben.

“Chapter closed,” Sunny began, thanking her supporters for backing her this year, both on Below Deck and off. “See you in 2025,” a topless Sunny added, basking in her bikini bottoms on a cliff by the sea, looking like a hot, potentially reoccurring new Bosun for the Below Deck franchise (or so we hope).

Below Deck is streaming on Peacock.

TELL US – ARE YOU SAD TO HEAR THAT BEN AND SUNNY ARE NO MORE? WHY DO YOU THINK THIS BOATMANCE FIZZLED OUT?

Hoda Kotb’s First Celebrity Replacements on ‘Today With Jenna & Friends’ Revealed

0

Three powerhouse women are stepping into Hoda Kotb’s shoes after the longtime talk show host’s upcoming exit from the Today show. Hoda’s Today With Hoda & Jenna co-host, Jenna Bush Hager, announced the first three celebrity guests who will be joining her in the morning show’s fourth hour beginning on January 13.

Taraji P. Henson, Eva Longoria, and Keke Palmer are kicking off the rotation, Bush Hager confirmed on Monday, January 6. “It’s going to be our month of wonder women,” she told Today viewers of the newly-branded Today With Jenna & Friends. Kotb shared her approval, adding, “You know what that says? Heavy hitter. Home run. Wow. This is a big week.”

Henson will be by Bush Hager’s side for the January 13 show, followed by Longoria and Palmer later that week. Some of the rotating replacements will stay on as co-hosts for a week at a time, while others may only stick around for a day or two.

Kotb announced in September that she would be leaving Today, which she’s been hosting alongside Savannah Guthrie since 2018. She’s been with NBC News since 1998 and first came to Today as the fourth hour co-host in 2007. In November, NBC announced that Craig Melvin will be Guthrie’s new co-host, while Bush Hager will be joined by a rotation of celebrity guests until a permanent replacement is found.

However, there’s no rush to find someone following Kotb’s final show on Friday, January 10. “Chill out. I feel like our audience deserves the time to get to know a ton of different people, a ton of different backgrounds,” she told Variety in an interview published on Monday, January 6. “We’re hoping to pull up the chairs to all different types of people. I think there will be some surprises for sure. And so, it’s like, when we know, I think we’ll know.”

Talia Parkinson-Jones, the executive producer of Today With Jenna & Friends, added, “We’re in this new version of the show and it’s really Jenna’s dating. We get a chance to meet different people, and we’ll fall in love one day, but until then we’re just having a really good time.”

These States Have the Most Private Jet Flights: New Data

0

Even though the Big Apple is the richest city in the U.S., with nearly 350,000 millionaires and 60 billionaires, New York State doesn’t even crack the top 10 when it comes to the usage of private jets, according to data from aviation safety company Argus International.

The data, which was analyzed by the travel company Rustic Pathways, calculated the number of private jets in every state per 100,000 residents and found that Alaska was awash in private planes. The state has about 4,996 private jet flights per 100,000 people and recorded 36,650 private jet departures in 2023.

However, it is important to note that Alaska has many areas that are inaccessible by road, which makes airplane travel necessary throughout many parts of the state, according to Travel Alaska.

Wyoming took the No. 2 spot, with 24,263 private jet departures, followed by South Dakota with 26,944.

“America flies more private jets than any other country in the world, with a grand total of 3,123,007 departures in the U.S.,” said Shayne Fitz-Coy, CEO of Rustic Pathways. “From these findings, it is clear America has a private jet addiction.”

Washington D.C. recorded 4,517 private jet flights per 100,000 people in 2023, which would have placed it just below Alaska, but doesn’t qualify for the “state” list.

However, the nearby state of Maryland was last on the list (No. 50) with the least number of private jet departures—only 353 took off per 100,000 people, according to the data.

Though Florida placed No. 8 on the list, the Sunshine State saw the most departures (369,838) and flights per day (1,013).

Shockingly, New York (No. 48) and Connecticut (No. 49) were low on the list. New York flies 472 private jets per 100,000 residents, according to the data, while Connecticut only saw 414 departures per 100,000.

US cyber watchdog says no indication breach at Treasury hit other federal agencies By Reuters

0

By Raphael Satter

WASHINGTON (Reuters) – The U.S. cyber watchdog agency CISA said on Monday there was “no indication” the recently reported breach at the U.S. Treasury Department had affected any other federal agency.

Late last month the U.S. Treasury reported that an unspecified number of computers had been compromised by Chinese hackers following a breach at contractor BeyondTrust, which provides cybersecurity services.

BeyondTrust said last month that a limited number of clients were affected but has not elaborated.

“As the forensic investigation is ongoing, BeyondTrust is unable to confirm the other customers who may or may not have been impacted,” the company said in an email on Monday.

The Washington Post has reported that the hackers breached the U.S. Treasury office that administers economic sanctions, aiming in particular to steal information about Chinese entities that the U.S. government might be considering designating for financial sanctions.

Republican lawmakers have demanded a briefing about the breach, which is the latest in a series of intrusions blamed on Beijing.

Liu Pengyu, spokesperson for the Chinese Embassy in Washington, has previously described the Treasury hack reports as “irrational” and represented “smear attacks” against China.

More robots and AI than ever before

0

CES 2025, the annual tech trade show with the latest gadgets and gizmos, kicked off its media day on Monday in Las Vegas with driverless tractors, a magic skincare mirror, instant hormone tests and more robots than ever before.

The multi-day event, organized by the Consumer Technology Association, welcomed more than 4,500 exhibitors showing off the latest laptops, TVs, wearables and smart home devices — with most featuring artificial intelligence enhancements.

Yukai Engineering introduced Mirumi, a fuzzy robot friend that can latch onto objects. Verge/Instagram

One of the toys garnering the early spotlight was a fuzzy, pastel-colored robot named Mirumi that can latch onto objects and swivel its head to look around. Created by Yukai Engineering, the robot is meant to act like a baby – so if you approach too quickly it will duck away.

Enchanted Tools showed off its orange Mirokai robot, which it hopes can one day help with elderly care in nursing homes or work in hospitality and customer service roles at hotels, food courts and restaurants.

Tombot Inc. brought its hyper-realistic puppy robots to the show, which are made for elderly individuals or those with health issues who can no longer care for a pet but would enjoy the comfort of a companion.

On a more industrial scale, farming giant John Deere rolled out fully autonomous tractors, lawn mowers and dump trucks that seek to solve labor shortages.

“When we talk about autonomy, we mean full autonomy,” said Jahmy Hindman, chief technology officer at John Deere. “No one’s in the machine.”

Samsung showed off its latest smart TVs – which have gotten a whole lot brainier thanks to artificial intelligence.

Its new Frame Pro TV, along with its other 2025 televisions, will be enabled with AI features like Click to Search, which allows viewers to seek out more information on anything they are watching. For example, those who see a delicious dish on their screen can simply click the button and AI will produce a recipe for the meal.

John Deere announced its plans to double-down on autonomy with self-driving tractors, lawn mowers and dump trucks. AP

Samsung’s AI-powered TVs also can connect to other smart home devices – providing real-time safety alerts. They can even play a summary of your pet’s bad behavior when you return home.

The South Korean electronics giant also unveiled a magic mirror that can help fine-tune your skincare game.

The Micro LED Beauty Mirror scans your face using AI to analyze your wrinkles, pores, redness and melanin.

A check mark graphic indicates you’re doing fine, while a red exclamation mark next to a category shows you need improvement – but the mirror immediately recommends a skincare product to take your routine to the next level. For now, the mirror only pushes products from Amorepacific, a leading Korean beauty brand.

Meanwhile, Dell showcased a new computer monitor with a camera that tracks your head movements so it can beam audio directly to your ears – a potential new favorite for gamers.

Samsung revealed its newest TVs, along with AI-powered features for all of its 2025 TVs. AP

As it directs audio toward each of your ears, it will block sound at the opposite ear – the same method used in noise-canceling headphones.

There are also a number of smart devices aimed at improving your health.

Eli Health introduced its Hormometer, a one-step, at-home testing system that can measure your cortisol and progesterone levels.

The test – which looks similar to a pregnancy or COVID test, with a small window that reads your results – requires a small saliva sample.

After sticking the cartridge in your mouth for one minute, you can use your phone camera to read the test’s results based on color intensity and patterns.

Eli’s app then provides personalized recommendations based on your results related to stress, sleep, athletic performance and fertility.

Biden’s questionable honorees: Letters

0

The Issue: Biden awards the Presidential Medal of Freedom to George Soros and Hillary Clinton.

Not content with pardoning son Hunter Biden and commuting hard-won federal death sentences, President Biden has now awarded a presidential medal to George Soros (“Megadonor among Joe’s medalists,” Jan. 5).

To be fair, Soros — as a young man — demonstrated incredible courage when escaping almost certain death by the Nazis. But that was a long time ago and Soros has since emerged as a principal sponsor of virtually every far-left cause calculated to undermine our criminal-justice system.

So what is Biden’s rationale for awarding the Presidential Medal of Freedom to Soros? I suspect that, in Biden’s muddled mind, underwriting campaigns of far-left prosecutors is a virtue.

Frankly, the Medal of Freedom, once considered a superlative honor, has become just another meaningless political and celebrity handout.

Mitchell Schwefel

Barnegat, NJ

Biden has not only devalued the US dollar, he has now devalued the Presidential Medal of Freedom.

It’s shameful to place his pals beside the likes of former recipients such as Ralph Bunche, Walt Disney, Henry Ford, T.S. Eliot, Edward R. Murrow, Jesse Owens, Norman Rockwell and countless others who contributed so much to America.

I guess he’s not in a position to offer them Cabinet spots, so he handed out these medals like the kid in class who gives out lollipops on his birthday.

Bo Madden

Jupiter, Fla.

Biden’s Medal of Freedom for Soros should be known as the “Presidential Medal of Destruction” for all the damage Soros has done to cities by helping absurd prosecutors who aided increases in crime and the losses of businesses, jobs and public safety.

And former Sen. Hillary Clinton? She deleted 33,000 emails after they were subpoenaed, then wiped her computer of evidence, impeding an investigation.

Gary Layton

Interlaken, NJ

The only thing that Soros brought to this country was death and misery by funding radical left-wing politicians and district attorneys who refused to prosecute or jail violent criminals.

Big cities across America have seen the mayhem caused by these left-wing ideologies — yet Biden awards the main architect of this misery the Medal of Freedom.

Michael Greaney

Massapequa

These medal recipients are a slap in the face to our country, coming from a bitter man who can’t find his way off the stage and is having his last presidential tantrum by honoring those who tried to take the US down with him.

This reminds me of the ridiculous former President Barack Obama’s Nobel Peace Prize — awarded for nothing. The value of all awards plummets with these kinds of selections.

Liz Muller

Barnegat, NJ

The Democrats, enraptured by a “woke” world, are still wondering why so many were propelled to the polls to vote for President-elect Donald Trump. They should look no further than Biden’s decision to award the Medal of Freedom to Soros.

Matthew Brief

Manhattan

Biden is trying hard to outdo himself in the last days before he wanders out of the White House and into presidential infamy.

Giving Liz Cheney the Presidential Citizens Medal for presiding over the Jan. 6 fiasco was absurd. Hillary Clinton getting the Medal of Freedom was even worse.

But George Soros, really? That’s a step too far.

Rick Meyer

Pinehurst, NC

Rewarding someone like Soros with a Medal of Freedom solidified the notion that Biden is mentally gone.

Putting Soros in the same group as war heroes and undeniable humanitarian leaders is an insult to each one of them.

Betty Schwartz

Livingston, NJ

Biden gave some Medals of Freedom to donors who gave him the most money. So shouldn’t Hunter Biden, who attended the ceremony, have gotten one?

Stephen Beccalori

Douglaston

Are Rollie Pollies (Pill Bugs) Good or bad for Your garden?

0

The humble pill bug, also affectionately known as a Rollie Pollie, Roly Poly or woodlouse, is a common sight in gardens worldwide. These little crustaceans with their distinctive ability to curl into a ball are often met with a mix of curiosity and apprehension by gardeners. But are pill bugs beneficial or destructive to our beloved gardens? The answer, like many things in nature, is not a simple one.

Are Rollie Pollies (Pill Bugs) Good or bad for Your garden?

Decomposers at Heart:

Pill bugs are detritivores, meaning they feed on decaying organic matter. This includes fallen leaves, dead plant material, and even animal feces. As they munch their way through this detritus, they play a vital role in the decomposition process. Decomposition is a crucial step in the nutrient cycle, breaking down organic matter into simpler forms that plants can readily absorb. In essence, pill bugs act as nature’s recyclers, helping to return valuable nutrients back to the soil, promoting healthy plant growth.

Benefits Beyond Breakdown:

The advantages of pill bugs extend beyond their role in decomposition. Their burrowing activities help to aerate the soil, improving drainage and allowing for better root development in plants. Additionally, pill bugs contribute to the creation of compost by breaking down organic matter in compost piles, accelerating the composting process.

The Potential for Damage:

While beneficial in many ways, pill bugs can, under certain circumstances, become a nuisance in the garden. They are particularly fond of moist environments and tend to congregate in areas with high levels of organic matter. If populations become large and food sources are scarce, pill bugs can turn their attention to living plants, particularly young, tender seedlings. They may munch on leaves, stems, and even fruits, potentially causing damage to your precious crops.

Signs of a Pill Bug Problem:

How can you tell if pill bugs are becoming a problem in your garden? Look for signs of damage on young plants, such as chewed leaves or missing chunks of stems. You may also notice the presence of pill bugs themselves, particularly in moist areas under mulch or around decaying organic matter.

Keeping Pill Bugs in Check:

There are several ways to manage pill bug populations in your garden and prevent them from becoming a major threat. Here are some tips:

  • Habitat Modification: Reduce the hiding places for pill bugs by removing piles of leaves, debris, and excess mulch around your plants. Aim for a thin layer of mulch (around 2 inches) that allows the soil to breathe.

Moisture Control: Maintain good drainage in your garden beds to avoid creating overly moist environments that attract pill bugs.

Natural Predators: Encourage natural predators such as toads, frogs, and certain types of beetles to take up residence in your garden. These creatures will help to keep pill bug populations in check.

Physical Barriers: Create physical barriers around your seedlings using organic materials like eggshells or coffee grounds. The rough texture and potentially repellent scents may deter pill bugs from feasting on your young plants.

Trapping: Set traps baited with potatoes, carrots, or other starchy vegetables to attract pill bugs. Collect and dispose of the trapped creatures regularly.

Finding the Balance:

Ultimately, the key to coexisting with pill bugs in your garden is to maintain a healthy balance. These little detritivores offer valuable benefits to your garden’s ecosystem. However, it’s important to be mindful of their potential for damage, particularly to young plants. By implementing preventative measures and controlling populations if necessary, you can ensure that pill bugs remain beneficial friends in your garden, not destructive foes.

Beyond the Garden:

The role of pill bugs extends beyond the garden. They are important players in various ecosystems, including forests, grasslands, and even caves. Their detritivore activities contribute to the breakdown of organic matter in these environments, ensuring the continued health of these ecosystems.

The Future of Pill Bugs:

As research on pill bugs continues, we may discover even more about their ecological significance. Their ability to thrive in diverse environments and their role in decomposition processes make them interesting subjects for scientists studying soil health and nutrient cycling. Understanding the complex relationship between pill bugs and their environment can help us promote sustainable gardening practices and maintain healthy ecosystems.

Conclusion:

Pill bugs are fascinating creatures with a vital role to play in the natural world. While they may occasionally nibble on your garden bounty, the benefits they provide often outweigh the potential for damage. By adopting a balanced approach and understanding their ecological role, you can ensure that rollie pollies remain helpful companions in your garden, contributing to a thriving ecosystem that promotes healthy plant growth.
