Top Judiciary Democrat Demands Alito Recuse Himself From Trump Hush Money SCOTUS Appeal

After reports that Trump had a conversation with Supreme Court Justice Samuel Alito before appealing to the court to delay his sentencing for his felony convictions, top House Judiciary Committee Democrat Jamie Raskin said in a statement provided to PoliticusUSA:

Yesterday, we learned that President-elect Trump spoke to Justice Alito just hours before Trump asked the Supreme Court to halt his criminal sentencing in New York. Justice Alito brushed off this startling ex parte private phone call and breach of judicial ethics by asserting that this perfectly timed conversation actually regarded his recommendation of a former clerk for an administration job. Especially when paired with his troubling past partisan ideological activity in favor of Trump, Justice Alito’s decision to have a personal phone call with President Trump—who obviously has an active and deeply personal matter before the court—makes clear that he fundamentally misunderstands the basic requirements of judicial ethics or, more likely, believes himself to be above judicial ethics altogether.

Justice Alito has made his political leanings and support for the president-elect clear, whether it be his display of flags in apparent support of the January 6th insurrectionists and the ‘Stop the Steal’ movement, or his self-proclaimed ideological battle with ‘the Left.’

In our democracy, Americans expect their cases to be heard by impartial judges. This concept of impartiality goes back further than the Court’s own Code of Conduct and underlies even the earliest versions of the federal recusal statute.

The mere act of having a personal telephone conversation with the president-elect, while he has active interests in matters currently pending before the court, is plainly sufficient to trigger a situation ‘in which the Justice’s impartiality might reasonably be questioned.’

Every federal judge and justice knows he or she must avoid situations such as this. Yet Justice Alito did not.

Impartial justice under the Constitution demands that Justice Alito hold himself to the highest ethical standards and avoid even the appearance of impropriety. In light of his continuing display of political bias and corresponding abuse of the public trust, Justice Alito has a duty, under the constitution and federal law, and under the Supreme Court’s own Code of Conduct, to recuse from Donald J. Trump v. New York, et al., if the matter is in fact now referred to the entire Court.

Rep. Raskin has it right. It doesn’t matter if Alito actually helps Trump in the case. Talking to Trump before the appeal is heard is enough to create an appearance of impropriety.

The current Supreme Court majority acts like they are above the law, so it is standard operating procedure for a justice on this court to meet with Trump before he tries to get his sentencing delayed.

This sort of conduct is why Americans have lost faith in the Supreme Court, and public confidence in the court is at an all-time low.

The Supreme Court majority has become an all-powerful partisan political advocacy group.

SCOTUS is a national crisis because of the conservative majority, and Democrats can’t regain power fast enough to take action against this corrupt court.

What do you think about Raskin asking Alito to recuse? Share your thoughts in the comments below.

Group Behind Project 2025 to Target Rogue Wikipedia Editors, Hold Them Accountable: Report | The Gateway Pundit

0

The Heritage Foundation launched a new effort to track down volunteer editors on Wikipedia who are publishing what they believe to be antisemitic content.

The conservative think tank sent documents to various Jewish foundations detailing its intentions to “identify and target Wikipedia editors abusing their position,” according to a Tuesday report from the Forward, a Jewish nonprofit news outlet.

A pitch deck sent to the entities said the Heritage Foundation, which created the Project 2025 policy recommendation blueprint for President-elect Donald Trump, would track repeated phrases and content patterns, edit frequency, topic focus, and similarities across articles on the free online encyclopedia to identify biased editors.

Heritage staff members told the Jewish foundations that the initiative would try to identify editors consistently opposing Zionism or promoting antisemitism.

The initiative is part of Project Esther, a national strategy from the Heritage Foundation to “counter antisemitism in the United States and ensure the security and prosperity of all Americans.”

Other tactics mentioned in the pitch deck included making “curated sock puppet accounts to reveal patterns and provoke reactions,” as well as pushing “specific topics to expose more identity related details.”

A spokesperson for Heritage told the Forward that she could not respond to inquiries about the project, while the Wikimedia Foundation, the parent organization for Wikipedia, declined to comment.

The revelation about the new campaign comes as Wikipedia, which is one of the most popular websites in the world, receives criticism for leftist bias across its content.

Elon Musk encouraged social media users to “stop donating to Wokepedia until they restore balance to their editing authority” last month after Libs of TikTok revealed that the website spent $50 million of its $177 million budget from 2023 to 2024 on diversity initiatives.

The Manhattan Institute published a study last year which found that there indeed exists “a mild to moderate tendency in Wikipedia articles to associate public figures ideologically aligned right-of-center with more negative sentiment than public figures ideologically aligned left-of-center.”

The site has “prevailing associations of negative emotions” such as disgust with respect to right-wing figures, but “positive emotions” such as joy with respect to left-wing figures.

“Our findings suggest that Wikipedia is not entirely living up to its neutral point of view policy, which aims to ensure that content is presented in an unbiased and balanced manner,” the analysis added.

The organization said their findings about political bias on Wikipedia were “concerning” given the status of Wikipedia as “one of the most visited sites globally.”

Egypt unveils new archaeological wonders near Luxor's iconic temple of Queen Hatshepsut

People visit newly unveiled archeological discoveries, including 4,000-year-old tombs of high-ranking officials and artwork from the time of Queen Hatshepsut, at an ancient necropolis in the famed city of Luxor. The artefacts, unearthed during a three-year-long excavation, were found in the Deir al-Bahari area in the necropolis of Thebes on the west bank of the Nile. The findings date from the time of the 15th dynasty (1650-1550 BC) to the powerful 18th dynasty (1550-1292 BC), which included pharaohs such as Queen Hatshepsut and King Tutankhamun, according to renowned Egyptologist Zahi Hawass.

Elon Musk’s AfD broadcast cleared up any doubts over his attitude to Germany’s far right | World News

0

They laughed, chatted like friends and agreed on just about everything.

If there was any doubt that Elon Musk’s heart lies on the far right of German politics, that disappeared during this conversation.

Musk was unequivocal in his support. “I am strongly recommending that the people of Germany vote for AfD,” he said. “This is simply the sensible move. Nothing outrageous is being proposed – just common sense.”

He added: “Only the AfD can save Germany – I want to be clear about that – only the AfD can save Germany.”

He predicted president-elect Donald Trump would solve the war in Ukraine “very quickly” because “hundreds of thousands of people” have died – and decried the European Union for monitoring the X broadcast of his conversation with AfD’s co-leader Alice Weidel.

“If people are fed propaganda, you don’t have a proper democracy – you need free speech to make an informed vote,” he said. “Whoever wants to shut down freedom of speech, they are the bad guys.”

The EU, for what it’s worth, thinks they are the good guys who are trying to prevent the spread of propaganda.

Musk, and his company X, are already subject to legal proceedings alleging his social media site has abused its dominant position.

They talked about whether the AfD had been demonised by its critics and both went to pains to claim that the expression “far right” was a concoction of the mainstream media.

Musk awkwardly mentioned something about memories of Nazism, before trailing off, but Weidel jumped in, saying that she wanted to “shed some light”.

Her argument was, remarkably, that Adolf Hitler was not actually a far right dictator after all but instead “a socialist, communist guy” who had exploited “the envy against Jewish people”.

“We are a libertarian, conservative party, but we are wrongly framed all the time,” Weidel said.

She blamed Angela Merkel for wasteful green legislation and a flawed energy policy, for ushering in a period of high migration that she linked to criminality on the streets. “The crime rate is rocketing,” she said.

She also claimed Germany had a “wokeish, liberal education system and all children learn is gender studies”. Ah, replied Musk, “so the woke mind virus has infected Germany quite badly”.

Could Elon be Trump’s middleman with China?

The conversation meandered from Ukraine to Israel, from migration to Mars, and to a slightly unclear discussion about whether God existed.

The promise to have questions from the audience, which was at one point well above 200,000, was ignored.

“It was wonderful listening to you,” said Weidel at the end. Musk chuckled, thanked her, and hung up.

BEIRUT — Lebanon’s parliament has chosen the head of the country’s armed forces, Joseph Aoun, to be its next president, after going more than two years without one.

Aoun’s selection on Thursday is one important step toward addressing a decimated economy and financial system, and to marshal funds to repair costly destruction from a 14-month conflict between Israel and the Lebanese militant group Hezbollah that ended in November.

“It’s long overdue that we really need to have a new president,” says Abdul Rahman Bizri, an independent member of parliament and a former mayor who says he voted for Aoun. “We have to start working again in order to rebuild the public sector and institutions and stability in the country in order to achieve what people are aspiring for.”

The new president’s to-do list is long.

Aoun vowed in his acceptance speech on Thursday to strengthen the small Middle Eastern country’s weakened state governing capabilities, reform the financial sector and defend Lebanon. It was unclear when Aoun would step down as the head of the military or if he would hold both positions at the same time.

“We will invest in the army to control and secure the borders in the south and demarcate them in the east and north, combating terrorism, implementing international resolutions and preventing Israeli attacks on Lebanon,” Aoun vowed in his acceptance speech. “It is time to invest in Lebanon through our foreign relations rather than betting on external powers to overpower one another.”

He did not name those powers but could have been referencing the rivalry between Iran on one side, which backs the Lebanese militant group Hezbollah, and the U.S. and Israel on the other.

Aoun, who is widely perceived in Lebanon as supported by Saudi Arabia and the U.S., also committed “to confirm the state’s right to have a monopoly on bearing arms.” That was likely an implicit reference to Hezbollah, Lebanon’s most powerful armed militia, which as part of a ceasefire deal with Israel must withdraw its fighters and disarm within Lebanon by late January. The ceasefire ended fighting that began in October 2023, when Hezbollah launched rockets at Israel in support of the Palestinian militant group Hamas, which attacked southern Israel from Gaza on Oct. 7 of that year.

Aoun will also be crucial to implementing that November ceasefire with Israel. Israeli military forces continue to occupy a strip of border villages in southern Lebanon, and Israel’s defense minister warned earlier this month that Israel might stay past January, longer than the terms of the ceasefire deal, if it feels Hezbollah has not fully complied.

Najat Saliba, a member of parliament who also voted for Aoun, says the situation requires the implementation of United Nations Security Council Resolution 1701, adopted after a 2006 ceasefire between Hezbollah and Israel that has never been enforced.

Lebanon’s members of parliament had failed in 12 previous rounds of voting to reach a consensus on a president, leaving the presidency vacant since former President Michel Aoun stepped down in October 2022. The former leader has no relation to Joseph Aoun.

However, this time, opposition to Aoun — primarily from Hezbollah’s political wing, which has a large minority of seats in parliament — largely vanished, and after two rounds of voting on Thursday, Aoun clinched the two-thirds majority needed to secure the president’s office. To do so, he had to secure support from a coalition of Lebanon’s diverse sectarian groups. Aoun himself is Maronite Christian, which by convention is a prerequisite in Lebanon for holding the office of president and head of the armed forces. (The system says the prime minister is supposed to be Sunni Muslim and the speaker of parliament Shia Muslim.)

Aoun’s opponents criticized him for being the preferred candidate in an election they allege has been stage-managed by countries like the United States and Israel, whose foreign minister offered a rare congratulations to Aoun shortly after he was elected. Aoun has been working closely with a U.S.-led monitoring commission to enforce the November ceasefire between Israel and Lebanon and has been praised by U.S. officials.

Some legislators also opposed letting Aoun bypass a constitutional restriction that forbade him from running for president while also serving as head of the military.

“Generally, there should be a president,” said parliamentarian Oussama Saad. “But we did not want there to be a president who starts their term with a breach of the constitution.”

In protest, several politicians cast blank ballots in Thursday’s vote, or filled out ballots with nonsensical candidates, including one vote for the U.S. Sen. Bernie Sanders.

What to know about temporary housing, rents, price gouging during fire storm

0

The Palisades and Eaton fires have burned thousands of homes in Los Angeles County, in the process creating refugees in a region with a persistent housing shortage.

For now, many of the displaced are staying in hotels, shelters or with friends and family. Others may be searching for a more permanent home in a rental. Many more will join them soon.

If you are looking to place to stay, here are some things you should know.

TEMPORARY HOUSING

AirBnB.org, a nonprofit that works with AirBnB hosts, is providing free, temporary housing for those displaced by the fires.

Those in need of housing can fill out an application here with 211 LA, an organization partnering with AirBnB.org on the effort.

Local hotels are also offering discounted rates, with more information available here and here.

PRICE GOUGING

Earlier this week, Gov. Gavin Newsom declared a state of emergency in Los Angeles County, a declaration that establishes protections against price gouging.

That means landlords can generally not charge more than 10% above what they were charging or advertising before the state of emergency, which took effect on January 7, according to the California Attorney General’s office. These price gouging protections also apply beyond the housing market to items like food, gas and medical supplies.

If a home was not rented or advertised before the state of emergency, there are protections as well. In such a case, the attorney general’s office says landlords can’t charge more than 160% of fair market value as determined by the U.S. Dept. of Housing and Urban Development.

California Atty. General Rob Bonta has encouraged the public to report price gouging to his office by using an online form available here.

Price gouging protections generally are in place for 30 days following the declaration of a state of emergency, but can be extended.

The tenant advocacy group Coalition for Economic Survival is also holding Saturday workshops for existing renters and those now in need of a rental to learn more about their rights.

INSURANCE CLAIMS

If your home was completely destroyed, your insurance company must immediately pay you a minimum of four months’ worth of rent for the local area in which you live.

You should contact your insurer and start the process as soon as you are in a safe place. More information on dealing with your insurance company, including on issues of rebuilding, can be found here.

Viewers will also be able to claim a three-month trial of Apple TV+.

The effort is a highly promotional one for Apple, as it will be directly accessible from the Roku home screen. With approximately 90 million users, it’s a massive opportunity for subscriber outreach for Apple.

Sorry haters, but UFC champ Jon Jones beats Tom Aspinall at his own game — ‘He’s a master at this’

0

UFC CEO, Dana White, said the heavyweight title fight between reigning division champion, Jon Jones, and current interim titleholder, Tom Aspinall, is 100-percent guaranteed to happen in 2025, while batting down rumors of “f—k you money” and potential retirement.

So please, stop whining.

Despite his emphatic victory over former 265-pound kingpin, Stipe Miocic, the 37 year-old Jones is no longer the favorite to defeat Aspinall, several years younger than Jones at 31. But don’t count Cain Velasquez among the many insiders picking against “Bones.”

“No, I don’t think he [beats Jon Jones],” the former UFC heavyweight champion told Ariel Helwani. “Me, just watching him, I kind of see his pattern a little bit in his striking, the way he comes in and strikes. I think Jon sees it too. So, I think with that — Jon studies. He does his homework. He’s a master at this. He analyzes things, he studies you over and over again. I think just for that reason, he’s going to know what to do. So I don’t think [Aspinall] beats Jon. Everybody has a fight pattern. Some people disguise it better than others. The simple fact is the way Tom, the way that he comes in and fights, he has a pattern that’s somewhat easier to find.”

Jones, certified evil genius, appears to have revived his mystique at UFC 309.

“When he comes in and strikes, a lot of things come with that,” Velasquez continued. “It’s disguising the pattern, it’s throwing fakes before. But when he comes in and attacks, he comes in and attacks. It’s 100 percent, full go. He comes in and glides in, lunges in, and does his attack. Not that it’s not effective, it is. He’s done great things with it. Look where he’s at now. I’m not taking anything away from him. But I think that the type of guy that Jon Jones is, I think he studies him and he beats him because of that.”

Negotiations for Jones vs. Aspinall are currently underway.
