Burglary suspects dressed as firefighters arrested in L.A. fire zone

0

Los Angeles authorities said they arrested 29 more people overnight in the fire zones, including one burglary suspect who was allegedly dressed as a firefighter.

Of the arrests, 25 people were apprehended in the Eaton fire zone, four in the Palisades fire zone, authorities said.

“We have people who will go to all ends to do what they do,” Los Angeles Police Department Chief Jim McDonnell said of a man dressed in a fire jacket and helmet burglarizing homes.

The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department and LAPD said they arrested suspects dressed as firefighters, including one man driving a truck in the Palisades area. The other suspects were found inside the vehicle. The men pretended to be associated with a fire station but a quick check with the fire department proved that not to be the case, officials said.

Los Angeles County Sheriff Robert Luna said those arrested were not from the area and that some had firearms and drugs.

About 20 similar arrests were made earlier last week.

Curfews remained in place in the fire zones, and the National Guard and police continue to conduct patrols in these areas.

Apple faces UK trial over contested developer fees

0

The UK’s Competition Appeal Tribunal will hear the case.

A four-year-old class action lawsuit filed in the UK again Apple’s App Store fees will finally go to trial on Monday, January 13 — seeking up to 1.5 billion pounds ($1.83 billion) in potential damages.

Claimants in the case, led by digital economy specialist and lecturer at King’s College Dr. Rachael Kent, are fighting the up to 30 percent commission Apple collections for in-app purchases (IAP). The lawsuit charges Apple is running its App Store as an illegal monopoly.

The suit says Apple forces developers to pass on the commission costs to consumers in the form of higher app prices. Apple has called the lawsuit “meritless” in court filings.

Kent said in a statement that Apple has “no right” to charge such a significant commission fee — “particularly when Apple itself is blocking our access to platforms and developers that are able to offer us much better deals.”

“Apple achieves this by slapping unjustified charges on its users,” she said in her filing, pointing out that global App Store revenues topped $15 billion in 2021. “It would not be able to impose these exorbitant charges if competitor platforms and payment systems were allowed to compete on its devices,” the brief noted.

“Apple guards access to the world of apps jealously,” Kent said. “This is the behavior of a monopolist, and is unacceptable.” The case is believed to bethe first of its kind for a Big Tech firm in the UK.

Apple’s rebuttal

In its response, the company said in a statement that “the commission charged by the App Store is very much in the mainstream of those charged by all other digital marketplaces. In fact, 84 percent of apps on the App Store are free, and developers pay Apple nothing.”

It went on to note that “for the vast majority of developers who do pay Apple a commission because they are selling a digital good or service, they are eligible for a commission rate of 15 percent.” The company introduced that lower rate for developers with annual revenue of less than $1 million in 2021, the same year the court case was originally filed.

The company has further pointed out in its filing that it considers the fees fair. It notes that the commissions cover the cost of the store and services provided to developers such as security, promotion, and the development of digital tools for access.

The crux of the case is that Dr. Kent charges Apple with acting illegally within its App Store, making the case similar to the seemingly never-ending Apple vs Epic saga. That earlier legal battle is currently in limbo, pending a ruling on Apple’s appeal to throw out the entire case, based on recent precedents in similar cases.

The UK’s Competition Appeal Tribunal will hear the new case, which is expected to last about seven weeks. Officials, including Apple CFO Kevan Parekh, are expected to testify.

Dern wants time before UFC title shot: ‘I want to be a dominant champion’

0

With her impressive submission win over Amanda Ribas at UFC Vegas 101, Mackenzie Dern is now on a two-fight win streak. That’s nothing special compared to other active streaks in the UFC. But when you’re a needle mover like Dern, you’re never too far away from a title shot if you want it.

Interestingly enough, it’s Dern herself telling the world to pump the brakes on title talks. During the post-fight press conference, the Brazilian jiu-jitsu world champion said she was still building a strong foundation in the hopes of being a dominant champion one day.

“I think I’m very hard on myself and I always try to get better,” Dern said. “Even when I have a great performance I think I did so many things wrong. So I think it’s a lot of play messing in your head, so it can take your journey and maybe makes it a little longer. But I think in the end it really helps you want to be the best fighter possible, if you can really look back and have constructive criticism on yourself, you know?”

“My idea isn’t to go fight for the belt and then lose it fast,” she continued. “My idea is to get the belt, and I want to be a dominant champion. So I’m not in a rush to get there. I want to have good fights, and I want to make a statement.”

So what is next for Mackenzie Dern, who currently sits at No. 6 in the women’s strawweight rankings and can expect a bump with the next update?

“My next fights are all going to be like ‘Dern 2,’ all these rematches,” she said. “Any of the girls. I think I’m going to train the best I can no matter who comes. Maybe Virna again.”

Dern beat Virna Jandiroba via decision back in 2020, and since then Jandiroba has gone 5-1 at strawweight to earn the No. 3 spot in the rankings. Most recently Jandiroba was set to fight Tatiana Suarez at UFC 310 but Suarez got injured (again) … then slotted into a title fight against Weili Zhang at UFC 312.

“I know Tatiana [withdrew] and then they kind of threw out that maybe I would step in [against Virna], but I don’t think that fight was really good for her at that time. But now that Tatiana is going for the belt, maybe that’s something that [Virna] would want to do.”

How Many Homes Have Burned & Are Lost So Far? – Hollywood Life

Image Credit: MediaNews Group via Getty Images

Los Angeles County is experiencing one of its worst wildfire disasters in history, Governor Gavin Newsom said. Residents have fled their neighborhoods even if they weren’t issued evacuation orders; many lost power, and others are displaced. After seeing the swift and extensive damage that the Palisades fire caused in several towns, others are bracing for another difficult few days as wind gusts increase again. Even several celebrities lost their homes in exclusive areas such as Pacific Palisades, Malibu, Altadena, Pasadena and more. As viewers around the U.S. watch the devastation unfold, many are wondering how many structures — specifically homes — have burned in the City of Angels.

How Many Fires Are in L.A. Now?

As of Sunday, January 12, 2025, there are currently three major fires still burning, according to Cal Fire: The Palisades fire, the Eaton fire and the Hurst fire. The Palisades fire, which broke out nearly one week prior, is the most dangerous fire still wreaking havoc across L.A. County. Moreover, further evacuations were issued as winds pick up again. The Eaton fire, which demolished parts of Altadena and Pasadena, is still an active blaze.

Southern California Fires Containment Status

The following is the containment status for each major fire that erupted in L.A. County, according to Cal Fire.

  • Palisades fire: 11 percent contained
  • Eaton fire: 15 percent contained
  • Hurst fire: 89 percent contained
  • Lidia fire: 100 percent contained
  • Sunset fire: 100 percent contained
  • Kenneth fire: 80 percent contained

How Many Homes Have Burned in the L.A. Fires So Far?

It’s still too soon for local officials to determine the amount of houses that have burned. As of January 9, 2025, at least 2,000 structures across L.A. County went down, PBS reported.

Celebrity Homes That Burned Down in L.A.

A large handful of celebrities lost their homes in Pacific Palisades, Malibu, Altadena and more neighborhoods across L.A. Among the stars who opened up about the losses were Mandy Moore (Altadena) and Paris Hilton (Malibu).

Paris revealed in an Instagram post that her Malibu home was completely demolished. While she grieved the loss of her house, the reality TV star and heiress acknowledged how fortunate she was that her family was safe and thanked the firefighters for their brave efforts. What was most traumatic, however, was that Paris and her family watched the home burn down on live television.

As for Mandy, the actress wrote in an Instagram post that her Altadena home was “still standing” though “not livable” at the moment, while grieving alongside her friends, neighbors and family who “lost everything” in the fires.

“Feeling weird survivors guilt,” Mandy wrote, adding, “We love this community and will do everything we can to help rebuild and support. Thanks for everyone for checking on us and offering us help. Altadena strong.”

The stunning European islands with their own parliament that many people never heard of | Travel News | Travel

0

The Åland Islands, a secluded treasure in the heart of Europe, quietly thrive between Finland and Sweden. Though officially part of Finland, these islands pulse with Swedish culture, language, and a remarkable sense of autonomy.

Their distinct identity is embodied in their own parliament, local laws, and even their own flag, which flutters proudly in the Baltic breeze.

Since gaining autonomy in 1920 under the League of Nations, Åland has carved out a niche in the European Union.

While they use the euro, they stand apart from the EU’s VAT system, turning ferry rides between Sweden and Finland into tax-free shopping adventures—a clever blend of tradition and modern economy.

Stretching across around 6,700 islands, Åland offers an untouched, natural paradise steeped in maritime heritage.

The capital, Mariehamn, houses about a third of the 30,000 inhabitants, blending small-town charm with rich history.

From Stone Age settlements to echoes of Viking voyages, Åland’s story unfolds through landmarks like the medieval Kastelholm Castle and the haunting remnants of Bomarsund fortress, built by Russian hands in the 1830s.

Yet, history is only one layer of Åland’s charm. Cultural gems like the Cultural History Museum and the Åland Islands Art Museum breathe life into its past and present.

The Maritime Museum tells tales of seafaring legacies, while Mariehamn’s walkable streets, dotted with cosy shops and inviting cafés, invite quiet exploration.

Nature lovers find their rhythm here—cycling through sun-dappled trails, wandering the serene Grottstigen path in Geta, or basking on secluded beaches where the water mirrors the sky.

Åland feels like a place out of time, where every stone and shoreline seems to whisper a story meant just for those who pause long enough to listen.

You can travel to the Åland Islands in several ways, each unique in their means of transport.

Quick and direct flights from Helsinki or Stockholm are available with Finnair or Air Leap to Mariehamn Airport(MHQ). In under an hour, you’ll glide over the Baltic Sea and touch down on this island sanctuary.

There’s also the ferry from Sweden, which takes between five and six hours. Boarding at Stockholm, a Viking Line or Tallink Silja ferry, though longer in duration, offers travellers another exciting fixture in their adventure – complete with tax-free shopping onboard.

At the Finnish port cities of Turku or Naantali, you can also take your car on the ferry, allowing you time and space to explore the islands at your own pace.

And, for the hardiest of travellers, kayaks and boats are available to hire to sail to the archipelago’s calm waters.

Homemade Old Bay Seasoning is a simple way to bring bold, zesty flavor to your dishes! This spice blend has a classic taste but with the freshness and flexibility of making it yourself. Perfect for seafood, meats, and more!

Overhead shot of someone lifting a scoop of seasoning from a jar of homemade old bay seasoning.

Reasons You’ll Love This Recipe

  • Versatile: This mix has a distinctive taste that pairs especially well with seafood like shrimp and fish. But it also enhances chicken, vegetables, and snacks like popcorn!
  • Budget-Friendly: Save money by making your seasoning at home! While you’re at it, give my pizza seasoning, Greek-inspired gyro seasoning, and spiced fajita seasoning a try!

Better Than Store Bought

When you combine your own seasonings at home, the flavors are so delicious and always make something unique and special. Homemade blends always taste better than store-bought. This homemade old bay seasoning recipe is the perfect balance of savory, spicy, and slightly sweet.

Ingredients Needed

How to Make Copycat Old Bay Seasoning

This homemade old bay seasoning recipe comes together in just 5 minutes! You can even prepare it in bulk, so you always have it on hand. Simply grind the bay leaves, mix the herbs and spices, then give them a quick stir or shake.

  1. Add the Bay Leaves to a Grinder: To make the ground bay leaves, add 8-10 whole bay leaves to a spice grinder or a coffee grinder.
  2. Grind the Bay Leaves: Grind until you have a fine powder. Depending on the strength of your grinder, this can take a couple of minutes. Alternatively, you may use a mortar and pestle to crush the bay leaves into powder.
  3. Mix: Add ground bay leaves, celery salt, paprika, ground mustard, ground ginger, ground black pepper, ground white pepper, cayenne pepper, ground cinnamon, ground nutmeg, ground cloves, and ground cardamom to a small bowl and mix until combined. Use in place of store-bought Old Bay seasoning.

Tips and How to Use Old Bay Seasoning

You’re going to love having this homemade old bay seasoning in your pantry! It’s super flavorful and can be used to season so many different foods!

  • How Do I Use Old Bay Seasoning? Use in place of store-bought old bay seasoning in any recipe that calls for it, or season fish, chicken, other meats, vegetables, or even eggs with it!
  • Do you have to grind your own bay leaves? You don’t have to grind your own if you’re able to find ground bay leaves at the store or online! If you grind your own, definitely use a spice or coffee grinder or a mortar and pestle to grind them finely. I tried using a blender, but it wasn’t able to grind the leaves finely enough. Using a spice grinder takes time, but keep it running long enough, and you will have a beautiful powder of bay leaves!
  • Make it Spicy! If you like things a little bit spicier, go ahead and add a full ¼ teaspoon of cayenne powder!
  • Grinding the Spices: If you want to meld the flavors better together, add the whole spice mixture to a spice grinder and pulse it a few times to let them grind together even finer.

Storing Seasoning

Store the homemade old bay seasoning blend in an airtight jar, container, or ziplock bag for up to 3 years! Ideally, seasonings and spices should be kept in a cool, dark cupboard in order to maintain freshness and flavor.

‘Subspecies’ Takes Very Specific Influence from ‘Nosferatu’

0

Robert Eggers’ Nosferatu has divided many critics and audiences. Some have praised the film, whereas others have seen it as something that pales in comparison to the original by F.W. Murnau and its later adaptation, Nosferatu: The Vampyre, directed by Wener Herzog. The influence of Nosferatu extends well beyond its original release over a century ago, from the images of skeletonized templar knights rising from their coffins in The Ghost Galleon to a character named after Graf Orlok and portrayed by Boris Karloff in the movie Targets. Nosferatu would also have a significant influence on the 1991 film Subspecies.

The first of what would be a series of direct-to-video films released by Full Moon Productions and directed by Ted Nicolaou, Subspecies was shot on location in Romania and makes full use of its setting to establish a gothic atmosphere. Unlike the romanticized portrayals of Dracula by the likes of Bela Lugosi and Christopher Lee, Subspecies marked the first appearance of Radu Vladislas (Anders Hove), a vampire whose appearance was more akin to Max Schreck’s portrayal in Nosferatu. Subspecies takes place in a world where vampires are not only real but have played a pivotal role in Romania’s history and survival.

In the Shadows of Transylvania

The cast of Subspecies
Echo Bridge Home Entertainment

The Romania that exists in Subspecies is one where the local population still believes in the traditions of antiquity. A common trait in gothic horror pertains to legends being tied to a geographic location, which are adhered to by the local population and dismissed by the skeptical outsider. From Dracula and Black Sunday to Candyman, all of these tales have a character dismissing these tales as nothing more than superstition, only to have them come to life and be proven dreadfully wrong. In Subspecies, the skeptical outsider is Michelle Morgan (Laura Mae Tate), an American student documenting folklore and history in Romania.

The lore of vampires and the enigmatic land of Transylvania have always been closely interwoven with one another. Subspecies makes use of its location in modern-day Romania to tie together the traditional folklore of the region, such as funeral rites and celebrations, and bring them into the present while incorporating historical events into the narrative. The result of these worlds coming together is a world where the balance between vampires and humans is necessary for the preservation of the population.

Subspecies acknowledges the existence of Vlad Tepes, known as Vlad the Impaler and who served as the inspiration for Count Dracula, and incorporates oral tradition within the film to tie his existence to the town in which Subspecies takes place. It’s well known that Vlad Tepes led several successful military campaigns against the Ottoman Empire. The story told in Subspecies establishes that it was vampires who helped save the town during a particular siege, tying aspects of history and folklore together. Small details like this make for exceptional world-building within the film.

Gothic horror movies through the 1980s and ’90s have their own atmospheric appeal. Here are some great scary gothic flicks to check out.

A Unique Take on the Vampire

A vampire in Subspecies
Echo Bridge Home Entertainment

As the main antagonist of Subspecies, Radu Vladislas is a unique incarnation of the vampire, though his design and portrayal contain influences from other notable actors who have come before. Radu possesses a gaunt appearance with long, bony fingers and a face that bears a notable resemblance to Orlok from Nosferatu. The actor behind the fangs, as it were, Anders Hove, was known to American audiences as Cesar Faison in the daytime soap opera General Hospital.

Hove brings Radu to life in a performance that pays homage to the actors who played the role in both versions of Nosferatu while making it his own. Anders Hove captures the movements of Max Shreck and the raspy voice and line delivery of Klaus Kinski. There are a lot of nuances that Anders Hove brings to the character; every single movement of his body and facial expression elicits a response from the audience.

The insatiable level of malevolence that Radu Vladislas has as a character is portrayed perfectly by Hove, and his performance would be vital in the numerous sequels that followed as more depth was added to Radu. A key aspect in Subspecies and something that would be present in all the sequels that followed also happens to be the film’s McGuffin, the Bloodstone. The Bloodstone, a relic that gives Radu his power, is something of a mystical oracle. The object itself isn’t good or evil but gets defined as such depending on the individual using it. The Bloodstone’s definition changes in different sequels, but its purpose of being the object that drives the plot forward is always consistent.

Quality in the Direct-To-Video World

A vampire drinks blood in Subspecies
Echo Bridge Home Entertainment

There’s a preconception about the direct-to-video market. It’s sometimes assumed that these films include less-than-stellar performances and don’t have the same level of quality as others that get theatrically released. Sometimes, this is so, but how a film gets distributed to the public, its reception, and ticket sales are never a measurement of quality. Subspecies proves this to be true. From the performance of Anders Hove as Radu, the way it blends multiple facets of folklore and horror together, and its sequels that managed to keep a discernable level of consistency with its storytelling, Subspecies is the definitive diamond in the rough.

Tim Allen’s return to television is certainly a noteworthy moment for the new year, especially as it is alongside the always-talented Kat Dennings. The two stars team up for the new sitcom Shifting Gears in which Allen stars as the owner of a car mechanic shop who is surprised when his estranged daughter (Dennings) comes back into his life. In need of a new start, she and her two kids move in with her father, reigniting their one combative relationship while also trying to move forward.

Allen seems aiming for a return to his blue-collar humor that made Home Improvement one of the biggest sitcoms of the 1990s. Having Dennings’ dry humor will be an interesting balance to his persona while the movie will also see the return of Seann William Scott in a supporting role. Shifting Gears season 1 premiered on Hulu on January 9.

Abbott Elementary – Midseason Premiere

Available January 9 On Hulu

There have been a number of midseason premieres this past week, including High Potential and the entire Chicago One franchise. However, there is one midseason premiere worth highlighting above all the others with the return of season 4 of Abbott Elementary. The show, following a group of dedicated but eccentric teachers in a struggling public school in Philadelphia, has grown into one of the most acclaimed comedy series on television.

While new episodes of Abbott Elementary are always worth noting, the midseason premiere comes with an extra special treat. Abbott Elementary’s crossover with It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia has been teased for quite a while, but seeing it actually become a reality is hard to imagine. The midseason premiere sees the gang from Paddy’s Pub serving as volunteers at Abbott, bringing their legendary destructive behavior with them for the job.

Along with Doc making its debut, this week also welcomes a new medical drama that features some strong veterans of the genre. John Wells brings along E.R. original cast member Noah Wyle for their shared return to the world of hospitals and doctors with The Pitt. The series also has a gripping and intense premise as the entire 15-episode first season will unfold over the course of one 15-hour shift for Wyle’s protagonist Dr. Michael Robinavitch.

Medical dramas like E.R. have often done a great job of showing the chaos of a typical day of work for these medical professionals, but The Pitt may be the most effective at showing how harrowing these long days can be. With the set-up blending 24 with E.R., it makes for a pulse-pounding experience. Also, while E.R. pushed the boundaries of network television, The Pitt embraces the freedom of streaming and delivers a brutal and gory look at the business of saving lives.

LeBron James defies his age again in Lakers’ win over Warriors

0

LeBron James walked through the visiting locker room Christmas afternoon and wondered if music was playing inside Chase Center.

As a DJ bumped early-2000s Ludacris near the hoop the Lakers were warming up on, James broke routine to dance and smile.

As much as any player in NBA history, James is aware of the stage. And even after doing it 18 times over 21 seasons, a spot on the court Christmas evening with everyone watching hit him like a triple espresso.

Facing Stephen Curry and the Golden State Warriors in a big game? Old news for James, who competed against one of his biggest rivals in five playoff series (and one play-in game).

But in the context of this season, with James days away from his 40th birthday, he looked like someone intent on savoring things.

James embraced Curry before the game, the two Olympic teammates from the summer still enjoying that experience. He ran onto the court after halftime, stopping at the end of the tunnel to playfully dance to “Not Like Us” with Chase Center security. And during the action, he delivered an age-defying performance for the unexpectedly shorthanded Lakers in a 115-113 win with timely help from Austin Reaves.

After a flurry of Curry buckets in the fourth quarter, Reaves drove past the Warriors’ Andrew Wiggins for a tiebreaking layup with one second left for the win.

Without D’Angelo Russell the entire game and Anthony Davis for most of it, James didn’t just use his old-man strength to bully into the paint. He jumped passing lines, dug in and deflected on double teams, swished midrange jumpers and bullied smaller defenders between him and the rim.

Russell didn’t play after sustaining a sprained thumb in the Lakers’ loss to Detroit on Monday. Davis, who has feasted against smaller Golden State lineups, played just seven scoreless minutes before exiting because of a left ankle sprain.

It meant that even the most energized version of James needed help. Wednesday, he got it.

Reaves scored 26 points to go with 10 rebounds and 10 assists, the third triple-double of his career. James finished with 31 points, 10 assists and four rebounds. Rui Hachimura scored 18 and hit five threes, grinning at the Lakers bench as he ran back on defense. Max Christie and Gabe Vincent chased Curry, and rookie Dalton Knecht, stuck in a monthlong slump, chipped in 13 points off the bench for the Lakers (17-13).

But winning is always hard — and the Warriors (15-14), like James, don’t shy away from the biggest stages.

Ex-Laker Dennis Schroder swished a three after a James block, and Curry hit a driving layup to cut the Lakers’ lead to two with less than 30 seconds to go.

Christie made a pair of free throws, but Curry hit an insanely difficult three over James deep in the corner to make it a one-point game. Reaves hit two more free throws but the door still was open. And Curry got open enough off a Draymond Green screen to make another three, this time with no one on him, to tie the game with six seconds left before Reaves gave the Lakers the lead again.

A last-second heave by Curry was no good, and the Lakers could exhale.

Sources — Zion late for team flight, resulting in Pelicans ban

The New Orleans Pelicans suspended Zion Williamson for one game for a violation of team policies, the team said Friday.

Sources told ESPN’s Shams Charania that Williamson was late for Thursday’s team flight to Philadelphia ahead of a game Friday night against the 76ers. The Pelicans’ traveling party was waiting for a period of time for Williamson to arrive for the flight.

Speaking with reporters Friday night in Philadelphia, New Orleans coach Willie Green said Williamson’s lateness to the flight wasn’t an isolated incident.

“There were several occasions that led up to this, and that’s how we got to this decision,” Green said.

Williamson missed Friday night’s 123-115 win against the 76ers and will rejoin the Pelicans on Saturday ahead of a game Sunday against the Celtics in Boston, the team said.

In a statement, Williamson acknowledged being late to “team activities” and apologized.

“I take full responsibility for this suspension,” he said. “I’ve worked extremely hard in rehab to get healthy to deliver for this team. There is no excuse for being late to team activities. I have apologized to [Pelicans owner] Mrs. [Gayle] Benson and my teammates and coaches and I also owe an apology to the fans. I can and will be better as a teammate and member of this organization.”

Executive vice president of basketball operations David Griffin said Williamson failed to meet “team standards.”

“His dedication to this organization is of paramount significance to us and to him,” Griffin said in a statement. “He has taken accountability for his actions and reaffirmed that commitment to the team today. I’m confident he will continue to evolve positively on and off the floor.”

Williamson missed 27 games because of a left hamstring strain before returning Tuesday night and scoring 22 points in a little less than 28 minutes in a 104-97 loss to the Minnesota Timberwolves.

He was rested when the Pelicans played the Portland Trail Blazers the following night.
